To say this is going to be an interesting week might be an understatement. First year manager Luchi Gonzalez will have his work cut out for him this weekend as he takes his FC Dallas squad to the Bay Area to battle the San Jose Earthquakes.
Right now, FC Dallas has 19 total available players. Just 19. Three of those are goalkeepers. While I normally list who isn’t available below in this weekly post but this time I’m also going to list out the actual available players, all will pretty much be on the trip today to San Jose.
Goalkeepers: Jesse Gonzalez, Kyle Zobeck, Jimmy Maurer
Defenders: Reto Ziegler, Matt Hedges, Bressan, Ryan Hollingshead, John Nelson, Callum Montgomery, Reggie Cannon, Bryan Reynolds
Midfielders: Francis Atuahene, Michael Barrios, Jacori Hayes, Thomas Roberts, Ema Twumasi
Forwards: Dominque Badji, Jesus Ferreira, Zdenek Ondrasek
In some ways I think Luchi has a pretty set defense. Ziegler is back in training after dealing with a groin-type injury these last two weeks. Cannon will almost likely be a starter again after he got a ‘rest’ game last weekend against Seattle according to Luchi. You know Hedges is a lock. That left back spot might come down to who plays in the #6 role in the midfield. You could throw Bressan, Hollingshead or Nelson in that role. All three would work and none would shock me to see (my money is on Hollingshead with Ziegler possible getting another shift at left back).
But what do you think Luchi should do this weekend? Knowing San Jose likes their man-marking system, do you throw something entirely different on the field?
Here is what we know in terms of availability for Saturday’s game (some of the loaned players could end up not being on loan, those are fluid each week):
OUT: Santiago Mosquera (knee)
QUESTIONABLE: Cristian Colman (torn ACL)
PROBABLE: Reto Ziegler (groin), Jesus Ferreira (calf), Jesse Gonzalez (ankle)
LOAN: Dante Sealy (North Texas SC), Moises Hernandez (San Antonio FC)
