FC Dallas vs New Mexico United: Highlights, stats and quote sheet

All the facts from FC Dallas’ exit in the US Open Cup.

FC Dallas’ run in the US Open Cup came to a crashing halt last night in their 2-1 loss to New Mexico United.

FC Dallas head coach Luchi Gonzalez

On the challenges New Mexico United presented...”Good team. Well coached. Two or three players that can hurt any team in terms of runs from behind and holding the ball up. But we didn’t execute the plan. We started off well, got the first goal. Didn’t close the half the way we should’ve. Pretty innocent in the ball in behind. So, that’s a growing pain for our back line. Anyway, it’s 1-1, second half, a lot to play for and we made some adjustments. I thought we started the second half well, created some opportunities and service in the box that we didn’t get on the end of. And then they get a dead ball and they score. We knew we couldn’t give up dead balls, that’s one of the ways they can score, and we conceded in that way so that’s disappointing. Disappointing we’re not going through. Not to take anything away from New Mexico, congrats to them, well deserved. But just disappointing that we couldn’t do more, especially there at the end where to me we’re all over them but we’re not getting enough service, we’re not getting enough crosses. I think the stat sheet says it, 10 crosses, so no that’s not good enough. We need 20 crosses. 20 crosses, that gives us opportunities to put things in the box. Especially when we’re playing with two ‘nines’ at the end and we got a center back committed and we’re not getting balls in the box. We only have ourselves to blame for this and I’m the one responsible. We’ll learn and we’ll move on and we’ll be ready to respond. This frustration, we’ll channel (it) into a response in the game we have this weekend against Toronto.”

Lessons the team can take from this loss... ”It’s all about the given day. And I feel we did a lot of good things (tonight), but we lost. At the end of the day, we need to kill. We need to put balls in the box and kill and we need to get balls out of our box and kill in the opposite way, get the ball out. [New Mexico] wanted it and they came out with the result. It hurts. Sorry to the fans. Sorry to everyone who came out to support us tonight and we’re going to work to respond in the next one.”

On Brandon Servania’s game...”Brandon has come back with a great motivation with his experience in the [U.S. U-20 National Team] and I thought he had a positive performance tonight. Obviously, still finding his rhythm and his fitness with the group but he did well and congrats to him on a great goal.”

On the lessons they can take looking to MLS play...”Obviously, the end result isn’t what we expected or what we wanted, but we pushed, we did have a few young guys on the field and I think we are going to learn from that. I just think we can do better, we know we can do better. So, we are just looking forward to next match to improve and focus on MLS play.”

On what was going through his head during his goal...”We’ve been working a lot in practice, I’ve been having some good shots in training and coach, he believed in me to take the shot. He’d been telling me ever since last game that I need to take more shots. He said that I have a high strike and I need to take more shots in order to score and help the team. So, it was a set play, I looked at Mikey [Micheal Barrios], he looked at me and I knew that I was just gonna have to just shoot it like I did in training and luckily it went in. I’m happy for that, but at the end of the day we needed the win so, we need to focus on the next.”

On what the goal did for his confidence...”Obviously it’s gonna help your confidence. Now, I’m looking to shoot a little bit more. I have my teammates support, my coaches support and I’m honestly just doing whatever I can to help the team so, if taking more shots is going to help us win games, that’s what I’m going to do. I’m looking forward to moving on and just focusing on Toronto on Saturday and keep pushing.”
