Squad Selection: Will Luchi Gonzalez roll the dice in the US Open Cup?

FC Dallas will have some players returning but will that matter any?

MLS: FC Dallas at San Jose Earthquakes Stan Szeto-USA TODAY Sports

FC Dallas begins their 2019 US Open Cup run this week as they host USL Championship side and former affiliate Oklahoma City Energy FC at SMU’s Westcott Field.

Luchi Gonzalez will be happy to get three players back from international duty for this one as Paxton Pomykal, Brandon Servania and Edwin Cerrillo all returned to the Dallas area on Sunday evening. Given how much Pomykal played during the U-20 World Cup tournament in Poland, I would estimate he will get this game off while Servania and Cerrillo will be used.

Outside of that, FC Dallas will still be without several midfielders, including a couple internationals that would normally make this roster guessing an interesting game given the roster limits in the USOC for international players. Seeing that FCD is green card heavy at the moment, they’ll likely only have three true internationals on the roster tomorrow night anyways (Bressan, Ziegler and Cobra).

The big question for some folks will come down to whether or not any North Texas SC player will be called up for this game. FCD has the ability to bring in any number player from their USL-1 team for the USOC tournament but they do have a game tomorrow night in Toronto, so that may limit what they’re able to do here with that. Thankfully, our hopes in NTSC star Ricardo Pepi playing in this game will come true as Luchi has confirmed today that he plans on using him.

Here is what we know in terms of availability for Wednesday’s game (some of the loaned players could end up not being on loan, those are fluid each week):

OUT: Santiago Mosquera (knee)

QUESTIONABLE: Cristian Colman (torn ACL)

LOAN: Dante Sealy (North Texas SC), Moises Hernandez (San Antonio FC)

Note: We have seen the reports that Ema Twumasi and Francis Atuahene have been loaned out to Austin Bold. Once we get clarification from the club we will report that.

INTERNATIONAL DUTY: Pablo Aranguiz (Chile U23s), Carlos Gruezo (Ecuador, Copa America), Bryan Acosta (Honduras, Gold Cup), Reggie Cannon (United States, Gold Cup)
