Spring is finally here and so is a new month of soccer in Major League Soccer. FC Dallas wrapped up the month of March with a pretty solid 3-1-1 record, good enough for 10 points and a decent position in the overall standings.
April is here with four games on the schedule, two home and two away.
Philadelphia Union - away - Saturday, April 6 (6:30 pm)
The first one up on the slate this month is our weekend trip to the City of Brotherly Love. The Union are a team right now that is playing fairly well with a 2-2-1 record so far through five games. They’ve begun finding their form too as of late, going unbeaten in their last three games with wins over both Ohio clubs (FC Cincinnati and Columbus Crew SC). We’ll have more preview material on this one in the coming days.
Portland Timbers - home - Saturday, April 13 (7:00 pm)
Luchi Gonzalez’s squad returns home for their first night game at Toyota Stadium this season against a conference rival that has been struggling out of the gate so far. Portland is in the middle of their long, season-opening road trip that takes them into June while their stadium is under construction. The Timbers haven’t been particularly good or bad so far despite their one point in the standings. They’ve been in most games lately but have defensive errors to sort out.
Atlanta United - away - Saturday, April 20 (3:00 pm)
The second road trip of the month is potentially a big one with the defending MLS Cup Champions who are reeling at the moment with only two points through four games. Atlanta is struggling through a new manager, some injuries and player losses like Miguel Almiron. No game is in the “must-win” territory this early in the season but if Atlanta continues to struggle, this game may be that for them when the time comes.
San Jose Earthquakes - home - Saturday, April 27 (2:30 pm)
Last year, the Quakes were FC Dallas’ kryptonite. No wins, lots of goals given up and just performances that left us all scratching our heads or punching walls. This year’s Quakes have truly struggled out of the game, losing all four games in March. So far they’ve given up a lot of goals (14) and have only scored two. I think we’ll all feel better if FCD can just take care of business for a change against this team.
So far the schedule is doing Gonzalez a lot of favors. You’re getting two games at home that should be wins over teams that continue to struggle. You’re getting away games against teams that aren’t dominating things at the moment either. While the full 12 points may feel like a reach, I do think it is in the realm of possibilities. Ideally though, I think you have to get no less than six points in this month for it to be a good progression forward with what FC Dallas is doing these days though.
Eight points feels accurate as a prediction to me. What are you expecting from this month? Let us know below.
