Hoops Home & Abroad: We’re Back

The MLS season is starting up this weekend, and so are we.

MLS: FC Dallas at Colorado Rapids Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

It’s been a long offseason, and while we’ve managed an occasional update, we haven’t really kept a regular report going. Well, now that MLS is set to get back underway, so are we. So welcome back to Hoops Home and Abroad, as we resume our weekly coverage of all players with ties to FC Dallas, the FCD Academy, or the Dallas - Fort Worth Metroplex.

With MLS just finishing up preseason, we’ll not be including MLS (or USL) players until next week, once the regular season is fully under way.

Europe

Weston McKennie (AP - Schalke 04/Bundesliga: McKennie sat out the match at Mainz 05, and Schalke 04 would go on to suffer a 3-0 loss. Schalke 04 now finds itself in a four match winless streak, that drops them to 14th place on the Bundesliga Table.

McKennie is recovering from a minor hamstring injury, that he suffered when Schalke 04 suffered a 3-2 loss to Manchester City on the 20th of February.

There’s an interesting transfer rumor making the rounds concerning McKennie:

Anton Nedyalkov (FCD - Ludogorets/Bulgaria): Anton started in a 1-1 draw at Cherno More. Despite being atop the First League Table with a 5 point cushion, Ludogorets currently finds itself in a 3 match winless streak.

Chris Richards (AP/FCD - Bayern Munich/U19 Bundesliga): Bayern Munich U19 was scheduled to play Freiburg U19 this past weekend, but the match was postponed, and will be rescheduled for later this year.

Ramiro Funes Mori (DFW - Villarreal/La Liga): Ramiro started in 2 matches last week for Villarreal. The first match saw Villarreal advance in UEFA Europa League to the Round of 16, with a 1-1 draw against Sporting CP (Portugal). Villarreal advance by an aggregate score of 2-1, and have learned who their opponent will be in the Round of 16:

In the second match, Ramiro started in a 2-0 loss at Atletico Madrid. In shocking contrast to their good fortunes during UEFA Europa League play, Villarreal finds itself 18th place in La Liga Table, within the relegation zone.

Emerson Hyndman (DFW - Hibernian/Scottish PL): Emerson is back to playing with the Bournemouth reserves. He started for Bournemouth U23 in a 2-0 loss to Liverpool U23, that saw him leave with some kind of injury.

Getterson (FCD-Maritimo /Portugal): This is not a joke. Getterson has long been the butt of many FCD jokes, but this winter transfer window, saw Getterson join Maritimo of the Portugal top flight. This comes on the heels of Getterson having played for top clubs like Coritiba FC (Brazil), Fortaleza (Brazil), and Pohang Steelers (Korea), since leaving FC Dallas.

Getterson saw limited action in his first two matches, as Maritimo tried Getteson on the wings. Something changed in the two most recent matches, as Maritimo tried Getterson at a different position, Center Forward. Getterson started as the lone Striker in the 4-1-4-1 formation two weeks ago, in a 1-0 win at 7th place Belenense. Getterson was one of the best players for Maritimo in that match (6.9 rating, Whoscored), earning him a second start this past weekend.

Getterson started at Center Forward on Monday, against visiting Portuguese powerhouse, Sporting CP. Getterson did not have as good a game, although not a bad one, and exited in the 66th minute following a yellow card. Even so, Maritimo managed a 0-0 draw, and move to 12th place in the Liga NOS Table.

Middle East

Mauro Diaz (FCD - Shabab Al Ahli Dubai/UAE): Mauro started yesterday against visiting 2nd place Al Ain, in a 2-0 win. It was a big win for Mauro and his team, who move to 4th place in the Arabian Gulf League Table, just three points behind Al Ain.

As for Mauro, he is having a fine season, currently sitting with one goal and eight assists in 14 league matches.

Mexico/Central America

Omar Gonzalez (DFW - Atlas FC/Liga MX): Omar started for Atlas at Dorados (Ascenso MX), in Copa MX action. The game would end in a 0-0 draw, and Atlas would go on to be eliminated from Copa MX 4-2 on PKs.

Alejandro Zendejas (AP/FCD - Guadalajara/Liga MX): Alex started for Chivas De Guadalajara on Wednesday, against Atletico San Luis (Ascenso MX) in Copa MX action. Alex would be subbed out at the beginning of the second half, as Guadalajara advances to the Quarterfinals with a 2-1 victory.

Rogelio Funes Mori (DFW - Monterrey/Liga MX): Rogelio started Wednesday against visiting Alianza (San Salvador), in Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League action. Monterrey would claim a 1-0 victory, that sees them advance to the SCCL Quarterfinals on a 1-0 aggregate score, where they will face Atlanta United FC.

Fabian Castillo (FCD - Tijuana Xolos): Fabian did not feature for Tijuana this week.

Nick Hagen (AP - Municipal/Guadalajara): Nick has regained the starting GK spot in Municipal this season, and he started on Sunday, in a 2-0 win at Deportivo Sanarate. The win sees Municipal move to first place in the Liga Nacional Table

Major League Soccer - Preseason

Kellyn Acosta (AP/FCD - Colorado Rapids): Kellyn signed a new three year deal to remain with the Colorado Rapids:

Keaton Parks (DFW - New York City FC):
