As the end of the decade comes full circle here, we’re breaking down some of the top moments, teams, and players of the last ten years with FC Dallas.
Our staff has come together to pick their top FC Dallas player of the last decade. Let us know who your’s is below in the comments section.
Nathan Hill - Matt Hedges
There are going to be a few names in the running. Ultimately, Matt Hedges is my choice as he has been a rock for this team since they drafted him in 2012. The Captain has provided what every MLS team needs to compete for hardware - a trusted veteran center back, even if he isn’t the most vocal leader in the locker room. The thing is - he’s still only 29 and has at least 4-5 more years in him, the prime of his career. What does this mean? There’s a chance we’ll look back in the next decade and have him in mind for player of that decade too.
Jason Poon - Matt Hedges
Everything Nathan said. Mauro Diaz, Fabian Castillo and David Ferreira were also my top considerations but in the end, Hedges wins out.
Drew Epperley - Matt Hedges
Everything in me wanted to pick a Mauro Diaz or a David Ferreira for this one. I mean their stats kind of speak for themselves. Ferreira contributed 16 goals and 32 assists over four seasons along with a MVP award in 2010 on the way to a MLS Cup run. Diaz had 67 goal contributions (23 goals, 44 assists) in 109 MLS games.
But at the end of the day, Hedges is still my pick. While the youth movement and players like Ferreira and Diaz defined the 2010s, Hedges was a solid rock for the team for almost the entire decade. In his 243 games, Hedges has earned two MLS Best XI nods (2015 and 2016), MLS Defender of the Year (2016), three All-Star games (2017-19), four FC Dallas Defender of the Year awards and FCD Team MVP in 2018. As captain, he led Dallas to its most successful season in 2016, winning the MLS Supporters’ Shield and Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
Jose Carmona - Matt Hedges
I wanted to be different and pick someone else, but that would just be ridiculous. Matt's body of work since being drafted in 2012, just eclipses anybody else that I can think of.
Ben Lyon - Mauro Diaz
With apologies to the big man, Mauro was the maestro for the club during its best spell during the decade and provided such a gallery of highlights while he was in Frisco. Consider this highlight reel was published at the start of 2015 and that the best was yet to come for Diaz- 13 Goals and 23 assists over the next two seasons earning Dallas 60 points each year (still the only MLS club to achieve this). He was a player who consistently had to be the focus for opposing clubs, and no one has replicated that influence since he left 2 summers ago. Also, he delivered this gem that absolutely destroyed Kasey ‘Disrespectful’ Keller.
Really hope that dude is having fun in the Gulf. He was so good at FCD.
