This has been expected and rumored for a very long time now, but the sale of Chris Richards to Bayern Munich appears to be completed.
Source: U.S. U-20 CB Chris Richards' move from FC Dallas to Bayern Munich is complete. FCD will receive a low seven-figure fee w/ sell-on clause for the Alabama native, who spent second half of 2018 on loan to Bayern. @SoccerByIves reported last month move was being finalized.— Sam Stejskal (@samstejskal) January 5, 2019
Richards moved from Alabama to join the FC Dallas Academy back in 2017. He signed a Homegrown deal on April 22, 2018. Shortly after, he was loaned to Bayern Munich for the rest of the calendar year. Richards’ impressed during his short stint with the German giants and it became increasingly clear that his time in Dallas would be coming to a close rapidly.
Goal.com initially reported that the sale was going to be for $1.25 million over a month ago. It appears now that the transfer window has opened, the deal can be officially finalized.
I’m impressed that Dallas was also able to get a sell-on clause attached to it, which could see FCD getting 2-3x more easily should Richards develop further and be sold to another club. Though it won’t fully take the sting of losing Weston McKennie for free away, this certainly helps and is a very nice piece of business given Richards was only with FCD for about a year before flipping him for seven figures.
