Congratulations once again to Ryan Hollingshead for outpacing all competitors in last week’s Workhorse vote tally. His energy is rightfully rewarded.
Circle back to that opening match of the season as FC Dallas struggled to a 1-1 draw with the New England Revolution at home. It was indeed a bit of a slow start to the season, especially in a home match that should have been a ho hum three points. A few doubts crept in to some fans who liked some things and were concerned about others in that performance. The team had looked good in preseason but couldn’t figure things out against more serious competition.
Weeks later, after a big first road win, how are you feeling now?
For one, road wins are always going to make up for lost points at home or in other spots throughout a brutal season. Getting a vital 3 points against a floundering team like Real Salt Lake is such a boost to playoff chances. It makes up a bit for the lost points against New England. In a tight Western Conference, that’s so massive.
Second, FC Dallas continues to grow. More than anything else, this team came out with fire and intensity and showed what they are capable of doing to any team. Yes, we fans have to admit we have seen growth in a short amount of time. It’s exciting. And with a whole bunch of youngsters getting minutes, the only way they can go is up. Expect great things out of Pomykal, Ferreira, Hayes, Aranguiz, and others.
A Side Note
Yes, I made the super bold choice to pick Real Salt Lake as potential shielder winners in what I expected to be a murderous conference. I was wrong. Holy crap, I was wrong. Sure, I think RSL is still a decent squad and have a coach who says a lot of good things - but at best, they may make the playoffs but little else.
Who to vote for?
Who will you cast your vote for this week? We have tons of options.
We saw solid enough games from Matt Hedges (who was getting after his teammates for some lack of concentration), Reggie Cannon, and Ryan Hollingshead. I’d like to suggest Carlos Gruezo as my top pick, not just because he got a goal but because he was as solid as usual. Who do you recommend? Share your thoughts below.
(And remember - we are only voting on guys who went 90 full minutes.)
