FC Dallas vs Houston Dynamo: Highlights, stats and quote sheet

All the facts from the 1-1 draw in the Texas Derby.

For the second time this season, FC Dallas went south on I-45 and came away with a 1-1 draw against the Houston Dynamo.

FC Dallas head coach Oscar Pareja

General thoughts on the match…

Painful ending. After we score and we put our team at an advantage at that point of the game, it was painful to give away the two points. For the overall game, I thought we played well. I thought the boys played a very complete game. There were not very many options for either team. It was very humid and I could see that having the ball and controlling the ball would just give us some chances in the second half. That’s what we bet for and we did it. We put ourselves at an advantage in the game and now we keep moving forward. We added points today. It could have been three, for sure, but the boys did a great job today.

On Pablo Aranguez…

He’s going to be growing in that position. He showed us some glimpses of what he is and Pablo is going to mature into our model and in our league. Those minutes are very valuable for him. The fact that he is getting that many minutes right now is healthy for him. It’s good for us. We have different options as well to rotate him when we need it. That’s one of the strengths that we have this year, but definitely having Pablo in that position can get us much better.

On controlling Houston’s offense for much of the match…

That’s the pain that we walk out from the locker room with... The boys did a terrific job with them. They controlled their speed. They controlled them all over the field - not just with the ball but without it. I have to remark about the job and excellent behaviors that we had defensively. I’m very proud of these guys. We end up just giving up one ball, but the game is cruel sometimes and we have to accept it because it happens to us sometimes [as well]. The boys defensively did a great job for sure.

On the goal…

It was a ball that was controlled. We should have done a better job defending that shot, but it’s what happens.

FC Dallas defender Matt Hedges

General thoughts on the match…

We had three points. We need to do better at closing games out. This has happened a few times this year. We just kind of switch off as a team and it is not helping us.

Why was Houston able to come back?

I feel like it’s a rivalry game and every team is going to get up for rivalry games. It’s always a big game for both teams and everybody’s trying to win. I felt like that was the difference.

On the goal Houston scored late…

We just turned off. That’s all you can really say about it. Nobody was really pressuring anybody and he turned and got a quick shot.

FC Dallas midfielder Victor Ulloa

On playing more emotionally tonight…

We have to keep intact and focus the whole game. It’s a battle and it got a little emotional tonight, but it’s a first for me. I’ll just learn from it and grow and learn how to adapt to that frustration.

On the rivalry…

We know that it’s a derby against them. We don’t care about the standings. We always want to win these games. We’ve shown that both teams leave everything on the field. The past few have been ties. It sets up a great game at our house on September 1. On the preparation for the game…

We knew that Houston was passing a tough moment. We wanted to come in here and take advantage of it. We had a great performance. We got our goal and got our lead and unfortunately, we let a goal slip away from us. It’s a learning experience for us. It’s better to happen now than in the playoffs.
