FC Dallas vs Houston Dynamo: Highlights, stats and quote sheet

All the facts and quotes from FC Dallas’ draw in Houston.

FC Dallas nearly escaped the heat and humidity of Houston with three points on Saturday but in the end a point is all they got after a 1-1 draw against the Houston Dynamo.

FC Dallas Assistant Coach Marco Ferruzzi

General thoughts on the match…

Good derby, what you would expect out of a Clásico between Houston and Dallas. Saw a bit of the rivalry back that we’ve had for many years. I think overall, the performance, we were really happy with it. Coach Oscar [Pareja] spoke with the team, said that he was really proud with the performance, good organization and effort tonight from everybody. Felt like we were strong on the duels, strong on the possession. We had chances to win the game, a little bit of it went back and forth. Houston had their moments, but a well-competed game from both groups. We’re happy with what [the boys] did tonight.

On the injury to Santiago Mosquera changing the game…

Those are always surprising. We were able to make a quick adjustment and bring in Tesho [Akindele]. He’s always ready to come off the bench and does his job. More specifically to the injury, the concern was Santi’s health at that point, but I think we adapted well, we controlled them in the flanks, where they are very strong. Tesho did a good job for us there in that regard. We started to find more volume with Mikey Barrios on the other flank throughout the game, but we controlled what was a good team tonight, in Houston. We created chances for ourselves, so we were happy with that.

On Roland Lamah taking the penalty kick…

[The players] do sort that out on the field and that was a conversation between Reto [Ziegler] and [Roland] Lamah. They went with that, so we don’t question that. We’ll move on and we learn from the situation.

On Victor Ulloa making his 100th regular-season start for the club…

He’s a real testament to our club, to our youth program, to the academy, to everything. He represents the club very, very well. He grew throughout the game, got better and stronger, a little indicative of his entire career with Dallas. Someone who just continues to grow and find ways to be on the field and have success, so very happy.

FC Dallas defender Matt Hedges

I thought it was a great game from us and that we played really well. We had the better chances, the better run of play and it just didn’t happen for us. We’ll take the point but could’ve been three.

On scoring his first goal of the year…

Just training on set peices. We work on it a lot. We know we have big guys. Guys who can serve the ball. Just working on our services and how to make our runs.

On early injury to Santiago Mosquera…

It’s always tough when you, in the first part of the game, when you have to sub a guy out. It changes the whole flow. It took a little bit of time for us to get back into it. But once we did, I thought we kept the ball and we did well.

On Victor Ulloa making his 100th start…

It’s fantastic. I mean, he was out of the team, and he’s back in the team. To get 100 appearances in that way is great. The shift he put in today was fantastic for his 100th.

FC Dallas midfielder Victor Ulloa

Thoughts on the match tonight…

We left the field with a little sour feeling. I think we lost two points today. They got lucky we didn’t take all three, but then again we had the [goal] called back [via] VAR, so happy with the performance of the team. We created a lot of chances. We just need to finish in the final third and then we should be okay.

On the Houston rivalry…

You see the competitiveness on the field. We fight for every single ball as well as they do, and I mean, it’s a derby. We don’t want to give up an inch. The games [have been draws] the past four games like you said. It’s just how a rivalry exists. We don’t want to lose. We both want to win. We give it our all out on the field.

On making his 100 regular-season start…

Happy, absolutely happy and proud of myself and all the work that I’ve done. Nobody has given anything to me. I think that I’ve earned every single game that I’ve played and I have happy feelings and emotions. Happy for me and my family. They actually got to come down and watch me play and play in my 100thMLS start. Just absolutely pleased. Hopefully I play many more games, but happy to have reached the 100 mark.

On his career so far…

I think as I’ve gotten older I’ve gotten more mature and wise. Tonight, I feel a little bit sorry because I could have finished the goal. It would’ve been the perfect night. We would’ve taken all three points home. But we have to keep growing. I have to keep getting in those spots. I’m trying to get into the attack a little more offensively, and try to help out by scoring a little here and there.
