For any 19-year old, learning and growing is apart of the game. FC Dallas right back Reggie Cannon is getting a full dose of that right now as he just wrapped up his ninth career start in the 3-2 win over the LA Galaxy.
Cannon spoke after the win about how he is elevating his game thanks to playing against the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and David Villa.
“Playing against Ibrahimovic is a dream come true,” said Cannon. “I mean he is one of the best players in the world. Playing against him, he won everything in the air, he is just a beast all around. But I feel after the game he made me better as I learned how to deal with that type of player. Same story with someone like David Villa. Someone beats you down, you get back up and get better. “
The game against LA was marked with some highs and lows for the Dallas defense, a group that has still only allowed a league-best nine goals on the season. Dallas went up early with two goals before halftime but the Galaxy were able to respond to some mental lapses in the back.
“In the grand scheme of things we got the three points,” explained Cannon. “At the end of the day that is what matters. But there were errors, loss of concentration on set pieces. I’m willing to admit that I made mistakes out there. I’m learning and growing out there each game. I talked to Oscar (Pareja) after the game and he said you are learning and growing.
I think the defense played really well, it was just for maybe like 30 seconds we lose concentration, that is all it takes in this league. You gotta keep focus for the full 90-plus.”
Cannon and Dallas will now be faced with a new challenge going into next weekend against the Vancouver Whitecaps as they have to shuffle their back four for the first time in 2018 following the red card to Reto Ziegler. But Cannon isn’t expecting anything to change.
“We know Maynor (Figueroa) is going to step up,” said Cannon. “Reto (Ziegler) played a great game, it was just a few errors and we’ll correct them next week. I have no doubt that the defense will be just as strong.”
Dallas will host Vancouver this Saturday afternoon at 3 pm.
