Workhorse of the Week vs. Colorado Rapids

FC Dallas manages a draw at home against Colorado. Who was the top player?

Welcome to another Workhorse of the Week.

Are FC Dallas fans overly critical?

I love existential questions, and I love this one. So far, FC Dallas is undefeated to start the season. While the results haven’t been particularly good, mostly draws coming at home, the results could have been worse. You can definitely argue either way. Are FC Dallas fans overly critical on a start to the season that, while not perfect, isn’t as bad as it seems? Or are FC Dallas fans right to see the warning signs that carry over from last season’s Titanic-like collapse?

Me, I definitely feel pulled between the two - to be both patient, recognizing that this team is still a work in progress around chemistry, communication, and strategy, and cynical, stubbornly aware to the fact that Pareja doesn’t seem all that interested in shaking up his tactical choices. This team still feels stuck. Urruti signing an extension looks more and more like the franchise is interested in running out the same lineup in hopes of different results.

So, maybe the fans have every right to be critical of this team’s poor performances dating back to last season, their embarrassing defeat in CCL play, and now the start of the 2018 MLS competition.

A Bore Draw

This is truth - I predicted a bore draw earlier this week when I thought FC Dallas was playing at Colorado last weekend. I changed my prediction to a gritty win for the home team afterwards, but that was a mistake, wasn’t it? This game wasn’t much fun. If not for the late gasp goal, FC Dallas would have given up 3 points to a Rapids team that is intent on playing pretty negative football. Overall, this was not the kind of game to show off the greatness of Major League Soccer.

I recommend voting for no one this week, because while there were some decent performances, it was uneven. Maybe you can give a nod to Jacori Hayes who continues to have a decent showing overall. Mauro Diaz was active, getting the game tying assist, but his free kicks and corners were really bad. Really, really bad. Matt Hedges is also not an RB and seeing him pushed up the field trying to make things happen was kind of shameful. What’s going on with this coaching staff?
