Workhorse of the Week vs Portland Timbers

A miserable home draw. FC Dallas gave a helping hand to a struggling Portland Timbers side.

Anton Nedyalkov earned his first Workhorse of the Week nod for his performance in FC Dallas’ rout of Seattle. Welcome to the league, dude.

Last weekend, FC Dallas had everything working in their favor. Portland Timbers have looked disorganized and awful to start the season. FCD were coming off a big win with an uptick of confidence in their pockets. The setting seemed ripe for a strong solid outing, say a 2-1 win, securing a vital three points at home.

But, no. Not gonna happen.

This was a frustrating game that flashed all of the continued warning signs from last season. FC Dallas is missing something. We used to think it was Mauro Diaz’s ability, but even with him on the field, it’s not right. This team is lacking tactical cohesion. Players are getting in each other’s lanes. They don’t seem to be working together, seeking to reward each other for making good runs.

Right now, after this extended period where many of us fans have given this squad the benefit of the doubt, I think it’s fair for some of us to feel anxious. Maybe we should lower our expectations. FC Dallas doesn’t look like a playoff squad just yet, but there is time. As much as I want to blame the players, I think we need to take a hard long look at Oscar Pareja and staff. Team BBQs are not a solution. Is there a formation change? Are there specific roles that need to be adjusted? Should some players just be benched for guys who are willing to work within the system that Pareja seeks to achieve? Or should they just play the kids and give them a shot?

I don’t have the answers, but we’ll see in a couple of weeks where they are.

Here’s my recommendations:

Jacori Hayes: His assist was one of the highlights of the match. I like this kid, but I imagine his ceiling is higher in a more aggressive role. Unleash him, Pareja. I want to see him flying around the field, please.

Roland Lamah: He is FC Dallas’ star player. He is our leading goal scorer. He is the best thing going for this team right now, and if you don’t like the way he plays or what he contributes in other areas, then you should be very, very worried.

Reto Ziegler: Hot take - he’s better than Matt Hedges.
