FC Dallas vs Portland Timbers: Highlights, stats and quote sheet

All the facts and quotes from Saturday’s draw.

FC Dallas had a man advantage again on Saturday but failed to get more than a point in a 1-1 draw against the Portland Timbers.

FC Dallas Head Coach Oscar Pareja

General thoughts on the match…

Not being in the rhythm of the game cost us. Portland was cutting the flow of the game. The second half, when we had the advantage, we could not make it count due to so many cuts into the rhythm of the game. We had the better of the first half. We created chances. In the second half, they tied the game and it was very speculative. We had control until then but after that we lost our rhythm. We still created a few chances that could have given us the three points but unfortunately we could not put one away.

I felt we dominated the game and were the protagonists. We were the better out of the two sides. We have to transform that and convert that into points because that’s what gives us an advantage. We see a team that was creating and creating and was just being a team who played good soccer. In that part it’s difficult for me just to not qualify the performance as a good one because you don’t get any points. The analysis we had said it was a good performance.

On Anton Nedyalkov

We are in analysis with him. Unfortunately he [Anton Nedyalkov] couldn’t continue with the game. But he came inside [at halftime] and we all thought he was able to continue, but in that one play he showed signs of struggle.

On the substitutions…

I wanted to put another forward in, but Portland put too many people in the middle and they clogged up that space. Their team was pretty much set in the middle and defensively as well. At that point I wanted to add another body there, a player that could provide some heaviness in the box, maybe the idea to have more pace and not have too much control of the middle but just adding more rhythm. With the red card, we thought it would give us more space but it gave us less space because Portland sat back and clogged up many plays… it was more difficult and we needed an idea but at that point the substitutions were already gone.

General thoughts on the game…

We played all right. It was a pretty even game. We limited their chances defensively. They had that one great goal by Blanco. We were just unlucky in the last 20 minutes to not get a goal while we were a man up.

On only getting a point…

It’s the third game of a long MLS season. We have some kinks to work out still. We were good offensively and defensively against Seattle last week. Maybe we were not as sharp today but the next match is always another chance to be better. You can see that we are creating chances. We need to find our rhythm… that understanding. It takes a few games into the season to start getting together so I am not concerned. We are creating the chances and we’ll start to put them away.

On breaking down Portland’s defense…

When a team goes down to 10 men, it’s tough. They’re going to be more compact. They’re going to take out a forward and bring in another defender. It’s tough to break that down. There is nine guys around the ball.

On the goal…

Portland counter attacked… He brought it inside on his left and curled a nice shot up into the top corner.

Thoughts on today’s draw...

The most important thing is to not lose at home, so one point today is good. We know that three points are better than one, but Portland is also a good team, so not losing at home is good. Thoughts on what FC Dallas is lacking in the first three matches...

We’re missing more goals, missing more goals, missing more goals. We are in our third match, but we still have more games and we’re still working. We have a good team. We will go to the playoffs, but we have to take it game by game. I think we’ll make it. FC Dallas midfielder Jacori Hayes

Thoughts on today’s draw…

It’s good we got the point. We clearly wanted the three points this afternoon, but we keep pushing and fighting for the next game. We have Colorado at home next, so we keep working towards that. Thoughts on working next to Carlos Gruezo...

The most important thing for a soccer player is confidence, so I feel like each game I’m getting more confident. Carlos Gruezo is helping me settle in with the team, helping me get some continuity. Thoughts on his first assist and contributing to the attack...

It’s very nice. You want to have threats all over the field, so I try to do my part. It’s obviously something I get to work on, pushing into the attack a little bit more, but I’m happy I got the assist today to Roland.
