Workhorse of the Week vs Tauro FC

New, 2 comments

The Workhorse is back with CCL action. What player stood out to in last week’s CCL game against Tauro FC?

MLS: Los Angeles Galaxy at FC Dallas Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

Happy New Year!

With regular season action and more CCL play days ahead, it’s time to get this season underway.

For those who are new to the site (welcome!) or those returning, my Workhorse of the Week poll invites fans, casual soccer heads, and Russian bots to weigh in after every week of football and vote for the top players across any and all action. In truth, I think a Workhorse isn’t necessarily the player who put away goals, but the kind who does the hard, gritty work to help FC Dallas to an important result. Sometimes, I’ll recommend a goal scorer. Other times, I’m going to suggest that defender or midfielder who stepped up and made life miserable for his opponents.

I’m abbreviating the column a bit this year - you’ll get a quick recap of action and then a few names that I recommend.

Last Wednesday, the first leg of CCL play for a still-preseason-mode FC Dallas turned out pretty miserable in a 1-0 away loss against Panamian outfit Tauro FC. The game was a bit disappointing. While the Hoops generated some chances and had moments of dominance, a sloppily defended goal turned what should have at least been a draw into a loss. There were moments when FC Dallas looked as lackluster as they did in the second half of 2017, not at all what we fans are hoping for.

Vote for the player that exemplified that Workhorse moniker below.

Recommendations:

Mauro Diaz was the bright spot against Tauro. He definitely took some hard fouls, directed the action, and served as the bright spot for the FC Dallas’ offense. A good sign.

Reggie Cannon deserves a mention for giving Tauro some headaches in the attacking third and for hanging tough in the defense. He definitely still has a learning curve ahead of him.

Matt Hedges looks renewed for the year ahead, even as he helps his new back line gel as quickly as possible.
