Workhorse of the Week vs. Portland Timbers

A draw on the road may seem lackluster, but in this stretch run towards the playoffs, this result is huge. Which player stood out to you for a vital away point?

Congratulations to team captain Matt Hedges for a deserved Workhorse of the Week win for his performance at Vancouver.

Away Draws

Let’s recall the mantra - win at home, draw away.

FC Dallas went to Portland on Saturday evening, hoping for a result like this. Sure, they didn’t generate the offensive looks that they might have wanted to, but their back line looks organized and determined. This is the right time for the defense to find its groove. Once the playoffs come, a stout defense is key. If FC Dallas can limit the goals, it increases the chances for them to claim a tight result at home in a leg or two to keep things moving forward.

Oh, and FC Dallas is going back to the playoffs, securing that with the point at Portland.

That sounds so good.

This team is still figuring things out. I feel like I’ve typed that sentence way too much, but it’s true. Santiago Mosquera has looked at times like a difference maker and at times like a marginal MLS player. Michael Barrios has done ridiculous things and then disappeared. Maxi Urruti has served up juicy assists but not found the back of the net. Roland Lamah has been injured. Tesho Akindele keeps getting minutes. Cristian Colman is starting again all of a sudden, though Dominique Badji is probably the better player. Where does Pablo Aranguiz slide in? There are so many questions on this roster.

But as long as Hedges, Reto Ziegler, Reggie Cannon, and Marquinhos Pedroso, shielded by the stellar midfield of Victor Ulloa and Carlos Gruezo, do their thing - it’s going to be fine.

Who to vote for?

I recommend anyone on the back line - Hedges, Ziegler, Cannon, and Pedroso deserve some love. So go vote, and tell us what you think. Is the defense peaking at the right time?
