Ben's Fantasy (MLS Fantasy Manager Round 27)

What do you mean David Villa’s injured?

MLS: Toronto FC at Montreal Impact Jean-Yves Ahern-USA TODAY Sports

This was going to be the easy week where you loaded up on NYCFC guys because they had two games this round. Then, David Villa got called up to Spain for the first time in years! Then, this happened.

Well, NYCFC is getting ready to be up the doo doo creek this round. There’s rumor he has a slight chance to return this weekend, but those adductor strains can linger for a bit. What’s more, Herrera, Ring, and Wallace both were away yesterday with their respective national teams as well. I’m already in catch up/throw caution to the wind mode, so let’s get silly.

Fool’s Gold: (Round 25. 2-3 (4.5), Season 14-11 (4.3 avg))

  1. Jack Harrison M $7.7
  2. Benny Feilhaber M $10.8
  3. Nicolas Lodeiro M $11.9
  4. Cubo Torres F $8.7

To be honest, the numbers look better than they should this round because I nailed the Dempsey pick and Houston couldn’t play their 2nd match on the Ark. Heavily fading Columbus was my Waterloo moment this year, but how was I to know that Higuain would show up to play 2 coming off injured (at least I played him), and VAR would make a total hash of reviewing a red card against Ashley Cole? Ok, I had every reason to expect VAR would ruin a game or two each round like it has consistently since its implementation. Seriously MLS- fix this @#$%!.

Villa here is cheating, since he’s out for one and unlikely for a second. Villa being gone means I’m not excited about Jack Harrison. Two road games for Feilhaber doesn’t exactly rile me up either. This seems like a good round to go with an extra defender or two. I think LA has figured a few things out, so I’m not rushing out to buy Sounders this round, and I think Houston’s situation is discombobulated enough to put a damper on a normally good fixture. In the case of Torres, are you sure he’s starting???

Again- this is the avoid pile. Do so at your own peril. These are all popular players I’m fading in order to catch up. This end’s this week’s disclaimer.

Byrd’s Ballers: (Round 25. 3-1-1, Season 69-30-20)

  1. Sebastian Giovinco F $13.5
  2. Ike Opara D $6.5
  3. Nemanja Nikolic F $10.2
  4. Lee Nguyen M $11.0
  5. Michael Barrios M $8.7

Beerretriever SC had the top score last round in the BigD League. It seems like he’s done that 3, 4, maybe even 5 times this year. Despite that, he still trails Phil by an extra week and then some. All hail Phil, you filthy animals.

Ant at home against a dodgy D. Yeah, hope you didn’t have to think too hard on that one. Opara is the rare D on the ballers list. That’s also a nudge towards Melia this round- Villa’s absence has really tweaked my thinking. After watching the FC Dallas game last week, I think Nikolic will figure out a way to get a few breakaways this round. I also don’t think FC Dallas gives a flip about playing in Atlanta in the debut of their new building. Barrios has the same number of assists as Lodeiro has goals and assists combined. Finally, Lee Nguyen tied the single game record for assists at home last round. He should be automatic at Foxboro for you at this point.

Skinflint’s Specials: (Round 25 5-1-0, Season 61-60-0)

  1. Ben Sweat D $4.9
  2. Sean Okoli F $6.0
  3. Kofi Opare D $4.4
  4. Jalen Robinson D $4.8
  5. Daniel Salloi F $4.5

I screwed up a fair amount 2 rounds ago, but I didn’t steer you wrong on DC. Opare remains here. I’ll add his new centerback partner Jalen Robinson here for good measure. For day one players, you’re getting close to the point you barely need any cheapies at all. That said, Ben Sweat is a lock to play two. I know Jonathan Lewis seems like a lock here, but I actually prefer Okoli due to the injury to Villa. Finally, Salloi looks like he may have locked down a spot. Definitely not my preference this round, but if you need a cheap point per dollar option as a sub, you could do worse.
