The US will play in their 8th out of 10 matches in the Hexagonal with the opportunity to qualify for an 8th consecutive World Cup Final hanging precariously in the balance. After a costly and almost unprecedented qualifying loss to Costa Rica on US soil at Red Bull Arena, the US could slide as far as 5th in the standings with a loss today. Is it squeaky bum time yet?
Well, honestly, it shouldn’t be. Over the entire lifetime of the series (including the pre-1990 dark ages), the US has only lost to Honduras THREE times. Now, the last time that happened, it produced a huge reaction which more or less inspired a movement for regime change despite the fact the US followed up that disappointing match by going 14-1-1 over the next 6 months, including a US record 12 match winning streak.
This match in Honduras should be a springboard towards wrapping up World Cup qualification and a good run of form. The
new old man on the hot seat has plenty of experience dealing with matches in CONCACAF outposts, and he knows the players from both rosters well. He should know what needs to be done to beat a team that’s only scored 2 goals in 4 matches (namely scheme to take Alberth Elis and Romell Quioto out of the game). I have to admit, after losing a home cup qualifier to Costa Rica for the first time since Ronald Reagan was president, I have my doubts. Hopefully, those are mostly silenced today.
