FC Dallas picked up a shutout draw on Saturday night against the Seattle Sounders.

Overall thoughts on the game…

A game of two different halves. The first one, we had more chances to score. We couldn’t find that last pass, that last touch to make a difference. But, we were able to control the game. The game, tactically and defensively was very good for us. That, at least, is a big step forward for a team that was dropping points and performances were very fragile in the back. Today, we felt different. We were hoping to have some more punch up front and get a goal that would make a difference for us… put us in a better spot in the standings but that was not the case. We walk out of here with one point. We need more. That is the feeling that we have in the locker room. We’ll keep fighting as a team. We’ll calm that situation of not being able to score. At the same time, we’re trying to stay organized as a team and tonight they did a good job with that.

On needing more than a draw…

You have to be realistic with the players. They know the moment. They know what is going on and what we are going through. I would like them to achieve what they achieved last year. I want them to get the points each week and we all walk out of here with a smile on our face but at this time we are just trying to get through this rough spell. We have to keep fighting. It’s what we are. The league is that tough. The league has become that hard for us this year. We’ll keep fighting.

Do you change your approach?

There are many ways that we address it as a team in the locker room. Our group is very conscience about what they’re doing. I praise them when it is needed. I let them know when things are not working well because I am a part of the group too. Tonight, I saw them fighting. I saw them trying to find ways to get goals and give us three points, but at this point it has not been possible. I will keep fighting with them. I am beside them.

On the team’s defense tonight…

We were very solid in the back. We need to stick with our concepts and be what we are.

What is the most important thing going into the final six games of the season?

We need to get points. That is the only way we are going to be a part of the finals. But, you get points through good performances. When I say good performances, I mean playing like we did tonight, being solid, being a team that is good defensively, being a team that applies all the fundamentals… You cannot get points if you don’t score goals. We need to be more composed in the last third. That is something we have talked about before. Today we fixed one problem. The other area, we lacked.

On the shutout…

We’re taking the positive of the shutout. We fought really hard today. Everyone walked off that field feeling like they gave their all. We wish we could have walked away with three but every point matters. We’re in a playoff race. Every point matters. We have to look ahead and put this one behind us and look to get points on the road.

On not winning since July 22…

I don’t know that it feels that long because we’ve had some good performances in there, don’t get me wrong, some bad, but a lot of good performances where we could have walked away with a lot more points. So it is frustrating to say “Man, it’s been two months without a win,” but at the same time, we’re still in a playoff spot.

We have a talented team. We believe in each other. We believe in ourselves as individuals, so we just look forward to moving on to each game. Each game is important. We need to go into each one with the same intensity and the same focus and say “This is it.” It’s getting close to do or die time. It might not be here yet but it’s getting close.

On the playoff race…

Right now it’s tight. San Jose is right there. Salt Lake’s not too far behind. You’re paying attention to what they’re doing. Right now, it’s all in our hands but right now we’re still looking at them right behind us.

Overall thoughts about the game…

Disappointed. The whole week we’ve been preaching that we wanted the three points and we fell short tonight. We have to get results on the road now. It’s coming down to the end of the season, so we have to get points to be in the playoffs.

The differences between the first and second half…

In the first half, we created a lot of chances and we were a little bit unlucky to not to finish one. Second half was a little scrappy… but we have to be better and have to create more chances. We should have gotten the three points tonight.

How the team is feeling after a draw…

Frustrated for sure. We have to get points. It’s coming down to the end. Now, we are going away, so we have to find a way to get the result and stay in the playoff hunt.

FC Dallas defender Matt Hedges

The defense’s performance tonight...

Defensively, for our backline, it was a good performance for us. We’re getting back to the basics, keeping the shape right, and getting the pressure right. We did that and limited their chances and got the draw. We wanted to get three points, but defensively we wanted the shutout and build off that.

Keeping a consistent backline…

Yeah, that helps a lot. The backline and keeping that organization is a lot about consistency and knowing your partners around you. When you can play that same backline over multiple games and in training, it’s really helpful.

The outlook for the remainder of the season…

It’s a fight. We have six games left for our future and to make it to the playoffs. We have to fight every game. Every point is vital for us.
