Power Rankings: FC Dallas can’t break free fall

Atlanta United ran by FC Dallas, and kicked them further down the rankings.

Welcome to another week of the MLS Power Rankings. This was just another tough week for FC Dallas, as they were crushed in every facet of the game at expansion side Atlanta United FC. The 3-0 loss could have been far worse, and it was painfully obvious at quite an early stage, that the game would be a rout.

Power Rankings, more like Power Outage!

Planet Futbol - Ranking 17 (Last Week 15)

Comments: Even in the unpredictable, inscrutable world of MLS, the fact that FC Dallas is entering the 2017 stretch run on the league’s longest winless streak (by far) is a tough one to wrap your mind around.

A year ago, this was a team that looked like a sure thing to claim the first treble. The U.S. Open Cup and Supporters' Shield were in the bag. But then Mauro Díaz tore his Achilles and even though the Argentine playmaker returned to action this June, FCD has never been the same. The dynamism, creativity and chemistry has vanished, the defense has been poor and there was an obvious lack of steel and verve in Sunday’s 3-0 thumping by Atlanta United. Dallas had no answer to the hosts’ pace or pressure and now, without a win in eight games (0-5-3), its playoff prospects are under threat.

“We were short in energy and many other areas that we couldn’t match the game and our opponent,” Dallas coach Oscar Pareja said afterward.

This is the rested and relatively healthy Shield and Open Cup holder, overrun and overwhelmed by an expansion team. It’s a stunning fall.

They're not that bad on paper, but these are power rankings, and at the moment FCD is powerless. Getting torn apart by an expansion team on national TV was a new low.

MLS - Ranking 13 (Last Week 11)

Comments: Things are unraveling in Frisco at a rate rarely seen in MLS history. Maybe a visit from some old foes will spark this reeling team?

ESPNFC - Ranking 17 (Last Week 15)

Comments: FC Dallas would still be in the playoffs if the season ended today, but their defense is a mess, and they were lucky to only allow three on Sunday in Atlanta.

SBI - Ranking 11 (Last Week N/A)

Comments: It appears there’s no end in sight to FC Dallas’ brutal stretch of form. Oscar Pareja’s men haven’t won since July 22 and it doesn’t get any easier with the Sounders coming to Frisco this weekend.

The Score - Ranking 11 (Last Week 8)

Comments: FC Dallas is enduring perhaps the worst-ever second stanza to a season in MLS history. What happened to this once-feared side? Playoffs are in doubt.

Soccer America - Ranking 14 (Last Week 14)

Comments: FCD drew the short straw in opening Atlanta’s new home and was a bit lucky to stay in the game as long as it did. The winless skid is eight games – during which is has conceded 19 goals -- heading into a crucial home game with Seattle on Saturday.

One Football - Ranking 7 (Last Week 11)

Comments: It’s inexplicable. The team that started the season as the best in the league has now failed to win in eight games. Fortunately for them, the weakness of the Western Conference means they will probably still make it into the play-offs.
