Crucial points in play

Soccer: 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup -USA at Jamaica Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The US Men’s National Team continues their quest for World Cup qualification with a crucial match with the Ticos of Costa Rica. Bad auspices abound from the last fixture in New Jersey between these two; the US, fresh off a lackluster Gold Cup in 2015, fell flat with a 1-0 loss to their opponents tonight.

Of course, the personnel this evening reflect significantly more important stakes this evening with Bruce Arena bringing up what he estimates to be his best available roster. That said, Arena failed to call in, objectively, his best option as a right back (and probably left) when he omitted Timothy Chandler from the roster. The subtext revolving around that snub will be heavily scrutinized, pending the results in the next week. Skipping on Chandler, when the outside backs remain a point of weakness, seems mindless. In FC Dallas country, we’re used to converted attackers playing outside back. Dallas has managed that well, but on the international level, it has exhibited cracks fairly regularly. On top of that, if we’re being honest, Bruce Arena is no Oscar Pareja. I have huge trepidations about this evening. Hit me up about in the comments!
