Workhorse of the Week vs. Philadelphia Union

I love my curvy team. Also, vote for your top player from that ugly loss to Philadelphia.

MLS: FC Dallas at Philadelphia Union Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

Congratulations to No One for winning the last Workhorse vote with that awful home blowout loss against Vancouver. But I take a moment to applaud my faithful readers for being creative and recommending Michael Barrios or Jesse Gonzalez (for the energy he spent picking the ball out of the net). Ouch.

I love my curvy team.

I love FC Dallas and their curvy ways. As a young soccer fan, I was often teased by my friends for my seemingly juvenile attraction to teams that won every game, that had big transfer budgets and big names and tons of merchandise available in most discount clothing chains. Then, as I became a more mature soccer fan and educated myself on the issues of tactics, Video Assisted Review, promotion/relegation, allocation money, and Texas bbq, I realized what a “lie” those “straightforward” big money teams are. For me, there is nothing more amazing than this “curvy” team right here - homegrown players, low cost loanees, contracts under $150k, spirited coaching, poor beer selection, tollway fees, attacking wizardry, and inexplicable defensive collapses.

Yes, FC Dallas may not be featured on the front page of ESPN Soccer, but it will always be featured in my heart and in my life. There is nothing better than a team that can win and compete for championships - and give up four goals inexplicably. Sure, we don’t have Giovinco or Villa or Schweinsteiger - but we are still near the top of the Western Conference just the same.

Look, fans, rethink what soccer fandom has taught you that you should desire. A real team doesn’t always win. A real team sometimes forgets how to play routine defense against inferior opponents or gets denied goals by inferior officiating. A real team is brilliant one week and wildly upsetting the next. A real team is worth it. And, hey, FC Dallas - don’t ever fool yourself by thinking you have to fit a certain mold or image to be loved and appreciated. There is a fan out there who is going to celebrate you for exactly who you are and buy copious amounts of season tickets and beer at an upcoming home game, someone just like me, your no. 1 fan forever and ever. Amen.

Vote

Who do you want to vote for this week after a frustrating away loss at Philadelphia, what I thought was an inferior team?

Did the team play better this time around? Absolutely. Michael Barrios was active throughout and got a deserved goal to build off of in coming weeks. Carlos Cermeno got his first start and showed some flashes as to why he could be a nice piece for the future. Or how about a youngster like Jacori Hayes making his debut. I can’t speak too highly of our defense, who ultimately couldn’t get the job done. You don’t have to vote for No One though, unless you really want to. Just vote.
