Hoops Home & Abroad: Fabian Castillo Suffers Setback

New, 6 comments

Things were going great in preseason, but that changed fast.

Welcome to another week of Big D Soccer’s coverage of your favorite players with ties to FC Dallas, the FCD Academy, and the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

Bad news for Fabi, more European preseason action, and several players were involved in big tournament games.

Europe - Preseason

Weston Mckennie (AP - Schalke 04/Bundesliga): Weston suited up Sunday, as Schalke 04 hosted Spanish Primera Division side SD Eibar. The game was 0-0 at the half, and Weston came on in the second half. Schalke 04 defeated Eibar 1-0. Here is the full match, for your viewing pleasure:

Keaton Parks (DFW - Benfica B/Segunda Liga): Keaton suited up Saturday in a friendly scrimmage against GD Estoril Praia (Portugal Primeira Division), and came on in the second half. Benfica B would go on to lose the scrimage.

David Texeira (FCD - Vitoria Guimaraes/Primeira Liga): No friendlies scheduled this past week.

Fabian Castillo (FCD - Trabzonspor/Super Lig): Things were going great for Fabi, but once again, he got bitten by the injury bug:

Mexico - Apertura Torneo

Rogelio Funes Mori (DFW - Monterrey/Liga MX): Rogelio started at home against Veracruz, and got the assist on this goal, just 1 minute into the game:

Monterrey would be up 1-0 at the time that Rogelio got subbed out (77th minute), and the crowd had a little message for the Argentinian.

The coach is defending him at the end of that video. Monterrey would go on to win 1-0

Alejandro Zendejas (FCD/AP - Atletico Zacatepec/Ascenso MX): Alejandro suited up and subbed in at the 83rd minute, as Atletico Zacatepec won 3-0 over visiting Atlante.

This was the very first match of the Ascenso MX Apertura for both teams.

Central America & South America

Blas Perez (FCD - Municipal/Guatemala): Blaz started against visiting Xelaju MC, in the first game of the Guatemala Apertura. Municipal would end up losing 1-0.

Nicholas Hagen (AP - Municipal/Guatemala): Nicholas got the start, and it is clear that he is the first choice goalkeeper for Municipal to start the Apertura. Municipal lost 1-0 to visiting Xelaju MC.

Anibal Chala (FCD - LDU Quito, Loan/Ecuador): Anibal started on Sunday, as Quito would lose 2-1 at Emelec.

Anibal got the start yesterday in Copa Sudamerica action. Quito was down 1-0 on aggregate to visiting Bolivian team Club Bolivar, and needed at least one goal to send the game into a PK shootout.

Try as they might, Quito simply could not break through in regular time, and got 4 minutes of injury time to work a miracle. With time running out, a miracle was delivered:

Chala got the assist, and Quito would win 6-5 on PKs. Chala had a MOTM type game, with crisp accurate passes, dangerous crosses, several dangerous long throws into the box, and even lining up at Center Back on several occasions.

The victory sees Quito advance to the next round of the Copa Sudamerica against Fluminense FC of Brazil.

Major League Soccer -

Lee Nguyen (DFW - New England Revolution): Lee started on Saturday and played 89 minutes. Lee started at Central Attacking Midfielder in the 4-4-2 Diamond and ended the night with 2 assissts.

Greg Garza (DFW - Atlanta United FC): No game scheduled

Jared Jeffrey (DFW - D.C. United): Jarred suited up on Saturday at Minnesota United FC. It was a miserable game for DCU, and Jared started the second half, with DCU trailing 2-0. It only got worse, as Jeffrey tallied an own goal, and DCU would go on to lose 4-0.

Dillon Powers (DFW - Colorado Rapids): Dillon suited up and came on in the final 12 minutes with Colorado trailing at the San Jose Earthquakes. Colorado would lose 1-0.

USL & NASL (All USL Games are available for replay on USL YouTube)

Adonijah Reid (FCD - Ottawa Fury FC): Adonijah suited up on Saturday against visiting Toronto FC II. Adonijah made his USL debut in the 61st minute with Ottawa holding a 1-0 lead. Ottawa would win 2-0.

Reid played solidly, but did not stand out. It should be pointed out that Ottawa doesn't give young players many minutes at all, so it is a good sign that they are willing to break that trend for Reid.

Corben Bone (DFW - FC Cincinnati): Corben started on Saturday against the visiting Rochester Rhinos. It was a foul mired affair that saw 11 yellows and 2 reds handed out, with both reds against FCC. Cincinnati lost 3-2.

Corben started yesterday as FC Cincinnati visited the NASL's Miami FC in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. FC Cincinnati would go on to win 1-0.

With the win, FCC will now host the New York Red Bulls in the USOC Semifinals.

Devin Vega (AP - San Antonio FC): Devin did not suit up Saturday, as SAFC won 1-0 at the Phoenix Rising.

Stephen McCarthy (DFW - San Antonio FC): Stephen started in SAFC's 1-0 win at the Phoenix Rising.

Eric Avila (FCD - Phoenix Rising): Eric started and played 66 minutes in a 1-0 home loss to San Antonio FC.

HH&A's Game of the Week: FC Cincinnat vs New York Red Bulls, Wednesday, August 9.

With a spot in the USOC Final on the line, expect 30,000 plus, in what should be one heck if a game.
