Offensive and defensive issues continue for FC Dallas following loss to Sporting KC

FC Dallas needs to speedily get Cariaco Gonzalez acclimated and onto the field.

FC Dallas had no chance of getting a result out of Sporting Kansas City with the way the team performed in their 2-0 loss. It brought problems both defensively and offensively to the forefronts of FC Dallas fans' minds.

Get Cariaco Gonzalez on the field quickly.

This team is in desperate need of offensive help, and FC Dallas received some reinforcement in the form of Venezuelan winger Luis ‘Cariaco’ Gonzalez. The summer signing arrived in Dallas on Sunday with his family.

He may not be featured on Wednesday for the Texas Derby since he will only have had a few days to practice with the team, but his wait time to get onto the field might be shortened because of his success recently with Monagas SC, which he left midseason. His last appearance with them before getting signed by Dallas was on August 5, a game in which he scored a consolation goal in the dying seconds of a 2-1 loss to Zulia FC.

Set pieces are still a weakness.

The stats show that FC Dallas has scored from two set pieces in 2017 (one penalty), and has been scored on by seven set pieces (four penalties) according to It is concerning that FC Dallas has only scored off of one set piece other than a penalty this year. It is also known that FCD can be vulnerable defensively in set piece situations. SKC found it easy to threaten Dallas with corner kicks on Saturday, and were able to score a goal from one of them with Diego Rubio left wide open in the center of the box.

Hernan Grana was the player who was marking Rubio. Reggie Cannon might be an option to rotate in for Grana, and so could Ryan Hollingshead. Something to watch if one of them does get time at the right back position is their ability to defend set pieces.

The same defense that was the best in MLS five months ago is not the best anymore.

FC Dallas was hailed as having one of the best defenses in MLS at the beginning of the season, and the same defense (with the exception of Jesse Gonzalez switching in for Chris Seitz) started the game against Kansas and showed nothing near the competence that they showed at the beginning of the season.
