Vote for your top player for the Workhorse of the Week.

MLS: FC Dallas at Sporting KC Peter G. Aiken-USA TODAY Sports

We had a tie last week - Cristian Colman and Matt Hedges earned an equal amount of votes for Workhorse of the Week. Good for them, but that home draw was some dismal stuff.

Scouting Report

Newcomers to any soccer team, unless they are really well known, tend to be a sort of unknown quantity for opponents. Roland Lamah and Colman definitely started the year in that kind of role. Teams weren’t necessarily sure how to play them or shut them down. Hernan Grana has a little history in the league, so maybe he wasn’t quite so unknown. But a few months in, you figure out which teams start to really figure out how to prevent Lamah from scoring or keep Cristian out of the net or shut down Hernan’s passing. Are we there yet?

I think so - I think this team has been with out ideas for a bit. Kellyn Acosta is part of the nucleus of that, and frankly, I think his poor run in the Gold Cup did much damage to his sense of confidence. He hasn’t looked the same - not particularly dangerous or incisive. Michael Barrios too has not been very surprising - he’s good at running on to balls and getting into juicy spots, but without someone on the other side, teams can spend more energy on him.

At this point, I do think teams have figured out how to mess with Roland. Lamah has some dribbling skills and brings tons of energy to the game, but he holds the ball too long and tries to do too much. A swarm of a couple of players invites an easy turnover. Grana hugs the line too much and seems convinced he can out skill check everyone, producing an easy turnover. Cristian probably does more to get in his own way, but I don't think teams have to worry about him much yet.

Ultimately, beyond a hard-working Urruti (who lately has been grasping a little too hard at long shots to make something happen) and the inconsistent Barrios, this team doesn’t have much going for it. Mauro Diaz should be the missing piece, the key to unlock it all, but until he’s 100%, this team needs to figure out something, even if it is to start playing Zimmerman at striker.

Frustrated

That’s all I am. I am frustrated at this team for playing such awful soccer lately. These swings happen - when you lose some matches and have disappointing results - but for FC Dallas to play so poorly and look so... lifeless. It’s not fun to be an FCD fan.

Will FCD lose its playoff spot? I hope not - and really, they should be able to scrap out some results here and there down the stretch. Then, of course, it’s anyone’s game - but this is not looking promising.

Vote... for somebody?
