The boys up north on I-35 head west to take on the Western Conference leaders Real Monarchs SLC tonight at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah.
Tonight’s game will give us the return of Energy FC from a well-needed break following a two week road trip to the northwest. Energy FC were able to pick up four points out of a possible nine, having dropped points at Seattle and Vancouver as well as being knocked out of the US Open Cup by Colorado Rapids of MLS. That said, the team should feel well rested after 12 days without a match and plenty of time in their own beds.
The trip was a tough one to handle after blowing a 2-0 lead in Colorado in the Open Cup, and conceding nine goals over just four games. Losing Rasmussen for the season to an ACL tear is not going to help things moving forward, but expect to see plenty of attacking prowess from the same team that scored nine goals in their past four games.
Real Monarchs will be eager to get back to their winning ways after losing in Tulsa to the Roughnecks on Saturday. Though their parent team in MLS has struggled mightily this season, the Monarchs are showing how bright the future can be with the Utah franchise - leading the western conference through 15 games, only losing twice and drawing once. It is important to note that in their past five USL games the Monarchs have are 3-1-1 while the Energy are 2-1-2 in recent USL action, so there are certainly opportunities to be had for the Energy tonight.
Projected Starting XI:
Energy FC: Laurendi; R. Dixon, Daly, Hyland, Wallace; Guzman, A. Dixon, Luis Martinez, Barril; M. Gonzalez, Craven
Real Monarchs SLC: Fernandez; Peay, Schuler, Curinga, Lachowecki; Besler, Adams, Haber, Brody, Hernandez; Hoffman
Location: Rio Tinto Stadium, Sandy, UT
Time & Date: 8:00 PM CT on July 5
Prediction: Monarchs win 3-1 (Craven 1x)
