FC Dallas vs DC United: Highlights, stats and quote sheet

All the facts from FCD’s big July 4th win.

FC Dallas picked up another big three points on Tuesday night as they downed D.C. United 4-2.

FC Dallas head coach Oscar Pareja

General thoughts on the match…

The players, coaches, the club, the fans, the whole program is proud. It was such a great game tonight. It was a great performance with many opportunities to score. The game was very attractive for the fans to watch. There was a lot of energy going back and forth for us and D.C. United.

From the first minute, D.C. United started creating problems for us. The game was not easy. It was a very difficult match against a team that would not give up. They scored two goals and created even more chances. The number of chances we created with our players in front of goal was very good. We would like to have scored more goals but the win tonight was deserved and the points were needed to keep climbing the table.

On Maxi Urruti…

Maxi’s effort and energy and tactical discipline is remarkable. Now that you are adding on top of that, exactly what we need from a forward, goals. Every game lately, he has been on the score board. That makes him even more important for us. We’re very pleased to have a forward with that type of character inside the box. I am very happy for him.

On why the offense is clicking all of a sudden…

Different facts can go into that answer. The fact that our forwards have been more polished in their finishing… The decision making is better. The boy are getting their confidence back as well because they always create a lot of chances. In the first semester, in CONCACAF Champions League, there were many occasions where we come out with one goal and we say ‘we should have scored more today.’ That level of confidence has been increased. That is important for a forward. The fact that Mauro [Diaz] is back in the lineup is important as well. [He is a] player that can come and turn the lights on for us, especially in the last third. He is a player that just creates. He is crafty. He makes the final pass that puts the boys in a better position to score. We are delighted to have him back.

On Ryan Hollingshead…

For a moment during the year, we thought we were going to bring him in as a winger. I was committed with him that [winger] would be his position. We were not going to put him in the back again if it was not necessary. Tonight it was necessary. He was just catching up on match fitness. His last few games have been incredible and important. He has given us a big hand. He has provided width on the left. Defensively, he has also been able to do the job so a complete performance from Ryan.

On Urruti…

When he gets in that spot, a goalie stays up high. A goalie is going to try and go high and near post on him so then he hits it low and it’s hard to get down on that ball real quick. So, Maxi, he knows what he’s doing with those shots.

On Barrios…

He gets to the end line more than anybody I’ve ever seen. The amount of times he gets past his defender and is able to cut a ball back, it’s just absurd. The guy is crazy quick and it’s huge to have a guy like that on our team.

On scoring at home…

We had a couple games road or home that we just weren’t putting up goals. It was just a bad stretch we had. Hopefully we’ll come back from this break and continue on this streak of scoring goals and putting it in the back of the net.

General thoughts on the match…

It was a hot one. We did give up the opening goal to them. We went down, which we didn’t want, but we were able to pull a couple of goals back before the half. That boosted our confidence a lot. After that we were able to create more chances with a lot of possession of the ball. There are some things that we still need to work on… we gave up two goals tonight and for me that is still unacceptable.

On scoring the 30th goal of his career…

Just scoring in general is always good because my kids ask me ‘Daddy, when are you going to score for me?” Every game they ask me and I try to explain to them that I am a defender but they don’t understand that yet. But tonight, I was able to score a goal to get my team back in it. I am happy for that. Credit to Victor [Ulloa] for the serve. Last game, he hit a few good ones that I was unable to get one the end of but lately he has been hitting the spot that Marco [Ferruzzi] has been asking him to hit. I was able to get on the end of this one and get him an assist.

On team's performance...

We are scoring a lot of goals and that’s really good for the confidence of this team and every player. We still know there is a long road ahead. We have to maintain ourselves on this path.

On Roland Lamah’s goals…

It looks like [Roland] Lamah likes to play in Texas. Every time he plays, he scores. He has great plays. I’m very happy for him, very content. He’s finding the back of the net and that’s what we need, his confidence. It’s needed to score goals. That’s important for us. He should enjoy this with his family, but he needs to remember that we still have a lot of games where he’ll be able to score.

On Mauro Diaz's return...

A lot has changed since Mauro [Diaz]’s return. He’s very important for us, I always say that. He gives purpose to the team. He knows what he is playing for… He knows when he needs to go in-depth or not and that’s very fundamental for us. So, I’m very happy for his return.
