Workhorse of the Week vs. Montreal Impact

And he scores! Step inside and vote for this week’s top player.

MLS: FC Dallas at Montreal Impact Jean-Yves Ahern-USA TODAY Sports

No one won, appropriately, the last Workhorse in that dismal excuse for a game back in Sporting Kansas City. But those kinds of games happen in the Open Cup. Oh well.

Turning to Montreal Impact, what a turnaround game.

Away points are precious. I had a hopeful thought that FC Dallas would come away with an away draw on Saturday night - and so what a game to see FCD leave Canada with a pocket of three delicious points of maple syrup goodness. A huge game - one that can help this team focus on what is to come and leave the bad taste of that SKC disaster behind.

I love how, though I’m certain this team will face moments of despair and doubt ahead, the perceived weaknesses of this squad might be turning into strengths.

A deep squad is one that finds unlikely scorers and lessens the load in pressure cooker moments. Maxi Urruti has been incredible this season, but this team has suffered a little when he is not scoring. Who can step up to fill the gap? Enter Cristian Colman, a player many had written off because of his gallery of errors in front of goal. Finally, he put one away* and then another followed and yet another.

*DAMN YOU REFS!

With Colman scoring, not only does this help the whole team, it takes a bit of pressure off Urruti. Pareja can look at the schedule and pick a game or two to give Maxi a super sub role or just a day off.

A deep squad is also one that finds ways to work out defensive and possession issues. Walker Zimmerman is not 100% back from his injury yet. Matt Hedges is playing for the US Men’s National team. If this squad has a big need, it’s on the defensive end with a need for center backs. And yet, FC Dallas has looked more than capable with Atiba Harris and Maynor Figueroa in the middle. Maybe we don’t have as big a need as once thought?

Give Walker more time. Let Matt enjoy this moment with the national team. Maynor and Atiba look better and better.

All in all, a terrific week for FC Dallas with Kellyn and Matt getting moments to show what they are made of. Granted, neither have looked stellar, but neither has any team in the Gold Cup. Maybe it’s just the beginning for the them, and there is a whole bunch more to come and learn.

Anyway, vote below.

I recommend, if you want to get all lovey dovey, a vote for Cristian Colman whose hard work led to an incredible hat trick*. But Maynor and Atiba also did some excellent work in the trenches. Vote!
