Workhorse of the Week vs DC United

FC Dallas gave fans fireworks on and off the field. Vote for your top player from last week’s home field explosion against DC United.

Victor Ulloa grabbed enough votes to secure a Workhorse of the Week with his 180 minutes of action across two scintillating games. Good for him. And stay tuned - I’ll talk about him some more in a moment.

Halfway through the season, FC Dallas are in an excellent position. Depending on how things go down the stretch, they can potentially challenge for the Shield, have a shot to continue in the Open Cup with a victory on Wednesday, and ultimately stay in contention for a solid playoff spot. A month ago, uncertainty loomed like a shadow across many fans’ collective imaginations. Who was the missing piece? What would get this team scoring goals again?

We were definitely lacking fireworks.

Against DC United, despite going down an early goal, FC Dallas found their fuse again. You can thank Mauro Diaz who is now in form and playing with some swagger. I bet he still gets managed carefully as we hit the stretch run of the season, but this team is entirely different when he is on the field. Defenses simply must do things different, which creates space for Michael Barrios, Maxi Urruti, and Roland Lamah.

You can also thank Roland Lamah for figuring things out. Roland definitely has the pedigree of a capable player, but many fans have been torn about his contributions. He’s shown flashes of skill and quality, almost as a target winger, but this team probably needs him more to make dangerous runs and become available for simple little goals like he contributed last Tuesday. He too will make teams adjust to his goal scoring presence.

And you have to love Maxi Urruti. He’s on fire, and it’s up to this team to keep fanning those flames.

The defense too is hanging tough despite being rotated in a bunch of ways and adjusting nearly game to game. Walker Zimmerman was back in action, which was huge, but look at how many places Atiba Harris, Maynor Figueroa, Ryan Hollingshead, and Aaron Guillen have been slotted in along that back line. It bodes well for rotation to come as Matt Hedges will deservedly get a rest here or there when he returns from Gold Cup action.

But, most of all, I want to show love to Victor Ulloa who is as solid as you could want out of a player. Teams do need playmakers, players who are simply a step above everyone else via speed, strength, vision, or whatever. Teams also need guys like Vic who do all the little things and still manage to toss in a killer pass or two. Ulloa is not on anyone’s transfer want list, but he should be. The guy is quietly, consistently good.

Vote for him again for this week, I say.
