Workhorse of the Week vs. Real Salt Lake

6 goals. Now, that’s a turnaround! Come inside and vote for your top player from Saturday’s game.

MLS: Real Salt Lake at FC Dallas Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

Matt Hedges claimed another Workhorse of the Week with his 180 minutes of gritty play over the busy double game week. Good for him - he’s now getting more minutes with the USMNT which is what he deserves.

6-2

Sometimes, a scoreline is all you need to toss out to give some context for the importance of a result. FC Dallas needed that scoreline. After a couple of dismal home performances, this was the bounce back they needed to get the season back on track and restore some confidence. Considering the tough matchup they have this weekend, FC Dallas can use this spark.

I’m not going overboard here either. Real Salt Lake is in a tough spot. They deserve some credit for fighting back in the second half, but that team is in all kinds of trouble right now. We should and can put the result in some perspective, but three points is three points.

Has Roland Lamah finally put it together?

Fans have been waiting for Lamah to break out. Great game from him. He wasn’t necessarily spectacular but he slotted away the three huge chances he had. FC Dallas has had too much trouble slotting away golden opportunities to take them for granted, so Lamah deserved a Man of the Match type accolade.

It’s about time - and we all hope to see more.

Give love to Victor Ulloa.

Victor is underrated. It’s amazing that we have a guy like him on the bench, and truly, Pareja needs to think hard about giving him more minutes down the summer stretch, rotating both Gruezo and Acosta if need be or playing them all together. Ulloa is a different kind of player, not quite a bone crunching defensive midfielder and not quite a playmaking unicorn. He’s in the middle of those two extremes, but sometimes, that is what this team needs, capable of solid work plugging the middle and cutting open a defense with an incisive pass. Frankly, Ulloa is better than Javier Morales.

Is there a team that would trade us some taco coupons for Javier?

That back line is a work in progress.

I don’t know how we will hold together that back line with the parts this team has and the tough matchups to come. Atiba Harris has turned into a solid defensive asset, I’ll give you that. I think Figueroa is underrated too. Grana is solid, though I’d still like to see a bit more. It’s that backup CB spot that we are all concerned about.

You can disagree with me, but I think Aaron Guillen has something. He reminds me of a young Victor Ulloa (ha!). He’s kind of a no nonsense type of player who works hard but doesn’t necessarily do the spectacular. He needs seasoning and experience, and he is getting it. While he has slotted in at LB with Fig moved to the inside, I am guessing he might very well get moved into the middle this weekend or some future match. Who plays LB at that point? No idea. Walker Hume and Reggie Cannon might also get looks as we await the return of Walker Zimmerman.

Trust in Pareja... I think.
