This one kind of felt like a college football recruit didn’t it? Long time youth El Tri member, Jesse Gonzalez filed for a one time switch with FIFA and had it approved this morning.
This almost feels like Bruce Arena was able to flip a commit from a rival school. Based on early internet activity, El Tri fans are not happy.
This switch means Gonzalez is now tied to the USMNT at the international level and is no longer eligible to play for Mexico, a country he’s represented frequently at the youth levels.
This does come as a bit of a surprise as Gonzalez has publicly stated that his heart led him more to Mexico than USA, but international soccer is some serious business and with Tim Howard, Brad Guzan and Nick Rimando in the twilight of their careers, there’s a huge opening for a young GK to grab a spot on the USMNT.
We’ll have more coming as we hear more, but for now, we can put this saga behind and focus on more important things like “Is Walker Zimmerman getting sold to a European club this summer?” This is also a good time to enjoy one of Gonzalez’ finest saves in an FCD uniform... because, why not?
What do you think? Did Gonzalez make the right choice? Should he have remained open and stayed with Mexico?
