Both teams needed late escapes in their previous round wins over USL sides from Oklahoma. FC Dallas got a last-second own-goal in their win over Tulsa, while Colorado needed to come from two goals down to beat Oklahoma City Energy FC.
FC Dallas notes:
Injury update. Once again, just one player to discuss here as Walker Zimmerman continues to rehab his MCL strain.
Call of Duty. Matt Hedges and Kellyn Acosta are out on national team duty for the Gold Cup. Also, Bryan Reynolds is with the U-18s in the Development Academy playoffs this week.
Key player for FCD: Cristian Colman. I think he’ll get another start in this one but at some point he has to find the back of the net. I keep thinking in the back of my mind that he’ll really only score goals this year in the CCL and USOC.
Biggest Question: Will the quick turnaround hurt FCD or help?
On one hand, playing a Friday-Tuesday swing isn’t really all that bad. It isn’t different from the usual Saturday-Wednesday swing, and it will allow one additional day before this coming Saturday’s game against Toronto. Basically the next two weeks are going to be all about roster juggling. This is the type of game you want to see some youth get minutes while at the same time having those key veterans play to help push you towards the next round.
Key player for Colorado: Dillion Powers. The Plano-native is always a force in the Rapids’ midfield. Locking him down will help make sure the visitors struggle on the offensive end.
OUT: D - Bobby Burling (foot injury 6/15, out 4-6 weeks), M - Mohammed Saeid (knee injury)
QUESTIONABLE: M - Bismark Adjei-Boateng (back injury 4/15, out 8-10 weeks), M - Shkelzen Gashi (hamstring injury), F - Kevin Doyle (broken hand)
