Workhorse of the Week vs. Tulsa and Vancouver

FC Dallas notched a late win to advance in the US Open Cup and eked out a draw in Vancouver. Vote for the top player across the matches.

There were literally nine votes last week with No One garnering three to edge out other contestants. Maybe I messed up the poll? Regardless, you loyal readers weren’t enthused with FC Dallas’ performance against Portland. Cool.

This past week was a busy one for FC Dallas in general.

US Open Cup play began with Dallas welcoming Tulsa to SMU’s nice backdrop. While FC Dallas came away with a late win, you can look at this one as half full or half empty. FCD played a lot of youngsters, vital to deepen the roster. Mauro Diaz also went a full 90, edging him closer and closer to his first MLS start of the season. However, if you are a pessimist, you can gripe about FCD not being able to break down an inferior USL side and being forced to bring on first team regulars to close it out.

I don’t know what to expect from the Open Cup and how much Pareja and company will focus on the competition, but you could tell they didn’t want to lose at “home” to a USL side. For now, the competition goes on.

FC Dallas followed that win with a tough away performance at Vancouver. Maxi Urruti was our best player with his “something out of nothing” goal to put FCD up, but you can also give tons of credit to our makeshift back line. I was very impressed with Maynor Figueroa in the middle - he even seemed to outshine Matt Hedges. Atiba Harris did a fine job on the left. This may be a working lineup until Walker Zimmerman gets healthy.

Offensively though, we are still left with some questions. Michael Barrios, Roland Lamah, and Tesho Akindele have yet to all click at the same time. Still, a draw away from home is fantastic.

Who will you vote for?

My recommendation is Matt Hedges who put in a lot of minutes in both the Open Cup and Vancouver game. He’s our rock. He's our captain. Did anyone else stand out for you?
