When Stuart Holden reported recently that FC Dallas keeper Jesse Gonzalez had been named to the US Men’s National Team provisional roster for the Gold Cup, the announcement astounded the locals and fans of the national team alike. Gonzalez, having already suited up on several occasions for El Tri’s youth national teams (and reportedly refusing a previous callup from the US), seemed as though he’d represent Mexico’s full national team for years to come. Now, it seems like a mere formality that he’ll be playing for the Red, White, and Blue.
Understand Jesse Gonzalez has officially submitted paperwork to FIFA for one time switch to USA and will be automatically cap tied. #USMNT— Stuart Holden (@stuholden) June 13, 2017
Of course, I’m a huge fan of this move, but I know we’ve got El Tri fans in the community. Since it involves his one time switch, the US isn’t even obligated to cap tie him with match time; once he’s switched, he’s switched.
Are Mexico fans as disappointed now as I am thrilled? Think he gets playing time at the Gold Cup? Are we ready for the days when we have to call up our U18s to play MLS matches while the entire first team is away on international duty? Let me hear from you!
Update: Hold everything, folks!
