CONCACAF titans grapple at Azteca

Soccer: FIFA World Cup Qulifier-Trinidad & Tobago at USA Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

The bitter pill that was FC Dallas’s 2-0 loss to Portland combined with a modicum of hooch last night has left me a little crudo this morning. Let me tell you friends, there’s no better cure for that hangover than some degenerate gambling and Moldovan pop music. For obvious reasons, I won’t cop to the former. As for the latter, you better believe I can get down to a little SunStroke Project (Moldova’s Eurovision representative in 2010 AND 2017).

Eat your heart out, Kenny G. Incidentally, Moldova was able to eke out a draw against regional rivals Georgia today, and despite the chosen one’s bullish proclamation, the US would probably be happy tonight if they match their result from 2014 World Cup Qualifying. Back in 2013, The US earned their first points from qualifying in history at Azteca with a 0-0 draw, and ten players from that team will be available for this Hex’s edition of that fixture.

Much like that year, the US earned the requisite 3 points at home going in to the match- then, a trickier fixture in the form of the Snow Classico- so, much like 4 years ago, a positive result here is hardly a must. With that in mind, here’s the starting XI

So, there’s that. Kellyn gets his first start in central midfield for the US, and the setting for that couldn’t be much bigger. Frankly, if the US is to have any chance tonight, he’s going to have to pull out a ‘Year of Kellyn’ type game. I’ll be posting up with adequate libation at 7:30 to riff with you all. Let’s go USA!
