Why I’m a fan of FC Dallas

We’re all about community here.

MLS: New York City FC at FC Dallas Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Welcome to the refreshed Big D Soccer! To celebrate the new look and feel of our sports communities, we’re sharing stories of how and why we became fans of our favorite teams. If you’d like to share your story, head over to the FanPosts to write your own post. Each FanPost will be entered into a drawing to win a $500 Fanatics gift card [contest rules]. If you’d like to do the same, head over to the FanPosts to begin. We’re collecting all of the stories here. Come Fan With Us!

But back to the theme here: why I’m a fan of FC Dallas. For me it has become a community. Both here online and in person. Most of you know that I am not from Dallas originally (West Virginia born and raised for those curious), so getting out and meeting new people with similar interests has always been a big deal for me.

I began following Major League Soccer back when it was first getting launched in 1996. Back then I didn’t follow the Dallas Burn, or even the two clubs closet to me in DC or Columbus. Oddly enough, I was a Tampa Bay Mutiny fan. Yes, a lot of it had to do with Carlos Valderrama, Roy Lassiter and Steve Ralston. It also oddly enough had to do with those uniforms and colors. I was a sucker for it back in the day.

But once the Mutiny folded and I was in college, I began visiting family here in Dallas and started to enjoy the Burn and the early FC Dallas days. Once I moved here I already had a soccer blog up and running of my own and decided to make FCD my team that I covered as much as possible. It was from being a writer of the team to being a fan rather quickly the more I got to know the people not only on the field but in the stands.

Ever since joining this site as an Assistant Editor and now Managing Editor, I’ve gotten to not only know players of the club, front office folks, but I’ve gotten to meet many of you. Some of you who have gone on to write for this very space and some who are just casual fans.

I like to think we’re all about community here at Big D Soccer. We don’t just write and report on FC Dallas but we interact with one another and share our thoughts, opinions and ideas with one another. I love that we are able to offer a wide array of things to you all each and every week.

I also love that our staff is able to bring you different perspectives on FC Dallas as well. We have writers not only in Dallas, but all over the country that write for this site.

One of my favorite things about this community is seeing FanPosts on the site. Yes, this is another cheap plug for them but they really are valuable to the experience here as anyone can do them. Yes, anyone. More times than not, if you do enough of them we tend to ask you to write full time for us! We hope you consider taking the time to share why you are a fan today in that area and after tonight’s game, offer up your thoughts as well.

So with that...why are you a fan? We want to hear your story and how you became a fan of this team.
