MLS: San Jose Earthquakes at FC Dallas Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

FC Dallas dropped their first match of the season on Saturday night in a 1-0 loss to the San Jose Earthquakes.

FC Dallas head coach Oscar Pareja

General thoughts on the match…Obviously, we’re disappointed with the result. Frustration is part of the game. I’ve come here many, many times with a smile on my face being proud of the result, but even tonight I was to back up that group of players. They gave me all that they had. The admiration I have for this group is even bigger today, in a moment where we are all disappointed that we let our fans down at home.

We were not clear in the final third. We didn’t have many ideas of how to break down that line of four and two that San Jose had out there. We didn’t turn the lights on in any moment of the game. We pushed in the second half. That urgency was more like us. I felt our energy and the chances we started to create at the end but if I were to say it was an unfair result, I would not be fair to the effort San Jose came with tonight. I have to respect the way that they played. The game gave them what they wanted. They scored a goal. They defended well. We couldn’t find a way to break that line, not even at the end. We were just sending bodies up front. They took the points and it just reminds us that this is a long journey.

On the change back to a 4-2-3-1…

We have played that way before. We have played more in a 4-4-2 recently but we have a lot of players here. [Javier Morales] is a fantastic player who can connect us and give us ideas. We saw it today in the middle. What we couldn’t do was find that final pass or that final touch. The formation was not the reason for the result so much. We played in that formation for three years so I think the players are used to it.

On bringing on Tesho Akindele for Roland Lamah

I saw Roland and Michael Barrios creating some options but the characteristic of this team is playing vertical and I needed someone who could get in-behind. Tesho provided that for us. Roland has been in most of the games. I could see the way that we play… He needed a little break.

On San Jose’s goal…

We spoke about the capacity Jahmir Hyka has to get behind and squeeze in passes. He moves very intelligently off the ball, especially in tight spaces. He created a few options for them. He was getting in there and occupying that space. I have to give credit to him. He played really well.

On heading into a midweek match against Chicago…

This team has character. This team has a model of playing. This team has ideas. We know what we are. I don’t doubt them heading into our match against Chicago. I would like to be undefeated until December but it looks like that isn’t going to be possible.

FC Dallas defender Walker Zimmerman

On the unbeaten streak ending and the first loss of the season…

It’s a weird feeling for us. It’s been a while. I definitely think we could have done a lot of things better but, at the same time, there were a lot of things we worked on throughout the week that we did well. We worked on our possession a little bit more and building out of the back and from that aspect, I think, we can take a lot of positives from the game. Obviously, we hate giving up goals so we’ll look at that but it felt organized. We might have lacked a little bit of urgency there at the later end of the first half and a little bit of the second half. Definitely things we can build on. We can’t linger on this result or this game. We got to look ahead to Thursday.

On San Jose’s goal…

It was a good goal from them. You got to tip your hat. Obviously we could have prevented it but there was a lot of class in that goal. They played it from out wide, did a quick one-two. It was a great first-touch from Ureña to put Hyka in. Great touch from him and a classy finish. Sometimes you gotta tip your hat. We could’ve stayed with our runner a little bit better and maybe been a little tighter to block the pass but it’s a good goal. They’re a good team. You’ll see them get a lot of good results this year.

On the quick turn and playing three games in eight days…

This was the game we needed to win to start the mini-trip. Three games in a week is always tough. We wanted to get the result at home. Now, I think that gives us the urgency to respond in Chicago and pick up some points that we might have dropped there.

FC Dallas midfielder Kellyn Acosta

On the second half adjustments…

We needed to pick up the tempo and get a little bit more movement. We were kind of lackadaisical. Previous games, the forwards, defenders were kind of in tune and in sync and today we kind of lacked that and it definitely showed. We weren’t really too creative going forward and we weren’t really much of a threat as we wanted to be. Maybe you could say the last five to 10 minutes we were kind of pushing them forward but overall, I mean, we weren’t really a big enough threat to cause some danger against them. That’s definitely something we’re going to work on this week, bring on into Chicago and then we can hopefully finish our chances and have the ball land our way.

On the first loss of the season…

Yeah, definitely disappointed, especially the way that we played. The energy and everything was there but we lacked certain aspects of the game that we really needed. I know the guys are definitely all down. We’re all disappointed with the result but that’s part of the game. I mean, there’s no team that’s going to be perfect. That’s what comes with it. So, we just need to bounce back. Thursday is a great opportunity for all of us to go out there, get on the right track and get three points.

FC Dallas midfielder Carlos Gruezo

On tonight’s loss…

A bit hurt. We knew it was going to be a difficult game. Unfortunately, we took a loss, but we need to stay strong and look ahead.

On next two matches…

They will be two difficult matches. We know they will be a challenge, but we’re focused on winning. We have a match away and at home so we are going to have to maintain focus and regroup.

FC Dallas forward Maxi Urruti…

On tonight’s match…

It’s a game that was painful to lose at home. We wanted the three points, to be on top and to be undefeated, but that didn’t happen.

On playing San Jose for the second time…

We were both better this game. Both teams created many opportunities to score and they were able to win, but we were not inferior.

On what the team could take away from tonight…

Nothing. We will continue the same way. We continue to do things well. It’s a game that we lost that will help us regroup and focus. We’re doing a great job. We’ll continue working the same.

On facing Chicago and Houston…

All the rivals are difficult. But we will go to Chicago first and try to win three points. We will refocus for our classic rivalry game and try to win here.

FC Dallas goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez

On tonight’s loss…

It’s not usual. We never expect to lose, but it is part of the game. We couldn’t get the points we needed today, but we need to keep working for the future.

On Hyka’s goal…

It’s something that happens. You never expect those types of plays to come. It was a play that could have been prevented. But at the end of the day, we need to go back and look at the video and work on that.
