Vote for the standout player in FC Dallas’ home match against Portland.

MLS: Portland Timbers at FC Dallas Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

Congratulations to Carlos Gruezo for a monster win with 72% of the vote for his performance against Sporting Kansas City.

As to Saturday night:

Soccer is a cruel game sometimes, and when you don’t come out on the front foot or with the right mindset or the correct formation, it’s hard to get things going.

Credit to Portland for coming in and putting together a great gameplay to keep FC Dallas from doing their thing for most of the night.

A draw at home is never a good thing. You want the 3 points. You need the 3 points, but even the best teams put together some bad outings at home. Sometimes, the ref, the weather, and just a bad night go against you. You can make the case that FC Dallas did well despite the circumstances to pull out a point at home. They came back twice from behind to eke out that precious result.

But, you can also make the case that this was a disappointing game. Pareja went with the wrong formation or certain players did not step up. Take your pick. When FC Dallas did turn it on, they looked to be the better team. Unfortunately, they couldn’t that extra goal to put them into the win column.

Javier Morales was disappointing on the night. I’m not sure if he is still adjusting or just can’t do what he used to do. We’ll see more of him, I’m sure, but right now, he doesn’t deserve to start. Maybe the matchup was just a bad one for him.

Our vaunted defense certainly did not look so vaunted. Poor communication? Sure. Missed clearances and assignments? Sure. It was not the performance we have come to expect. However, some calls definitely went against the back line, including the bad call that led to the opening goal for Portland.

On the positive side, Tesho Akindele is such a hot/cold player, but on Saturday night, he was able to get back to boiling with an active performance that threatened Portland and earned himself a goal. I think Maxi Urruti gave another fantastic performance. He is this team’s early season MVP officially now. Energy off the bench was welcome.
