It’s time for the United States oldest tournament: the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. FC Dallas’ affiliate, Oklahoma City Energy FC, will play the defending USASA Region IV Champion Moreno Valley FC in the 2nd round of the tournament on May 17 at the soccer complex at the University of Oklahoma.
The OKC Energy head into Wednesday’s night match after suffering a last-minute defeat against Phoenix Rising FC over the weekend. Having leveled the match at 1-1 in stoppage time, OKC were unable to maintain the draw as Phoenix Rising FC winger Shaun Wright-Phillips scored a game-winning goal in the dying embers of the match. This loss sees the Energy drop to 14th in the USL Western Conference Standings, only one spot above last-placed side Portland Timbers 2.
OKC are in dire of a resurgence and will hope to find it during this week’s cup match. Jimmy Nielsen’s side will be squaring off against USASA Region IV Champions Moreno Valley FC. Brought to life in 2015, the Southern California team hasn’t wasted anytime chasing glory as they already have a trophy under their belt and an appearance in the USASA National Cup tournament, where they lost to eventual Champion, Christos FC of Maryland. MVFC’s top talents include their captain Carlos Figueroa and former Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United youth player Jadilson Viera.
Moreno Valley FC earned a spot in the tournament’s second after defeating the Ventura County Fusion, 2-0.
