All the facts from FC Dallas’ draw with Portland.

FC Dallas picked up a big draw Saturday night against the Portland Timbers.

FC Dallas head coach Oscar Pareja

General thoughts on the match…

What I have learned as a head coach is that it matters how you achieve the points. In this case, today, we got a point, which was deserved because of what we did in the second half. In the first half, we deserved to be losing the game. We didn’t have control. Portland did not have control either but they took advantage of their chance on a set piece. That brought us bad energy in that part of the half and the game started to get out of control.

At the half, we were able to calm the group down and explain that turning things around was as easy as just playing and not worrying about anything else… Not Portland and not the referees… In the second half, we had [four shots on goal].

It was not a clean game, the sequences were broken. The fans can be happy to see an entertaining game but it was a game that I am not happy with.

On the slow start…

I would like to have all the answers. This group has played a lot of games already this season and I can’t recall many games like this. For me, one or two like this are plenty. We are dealing with the problem of giving up late goals last week. One in Pachuca cost us a trip to the final. The other in San Jose cost us two points. I was looking for those answers as to why that is happening last week. You’re asking me a different one today, ‘why are we starting slow?’ All I can say is that it was not good enough.

On Maxi Urruti…

I played the game. I know how important it is to play well against your former team. The context of the situation was clear. During the week, he was hoping and aiming for a goal tonight. Normal.

FC Dallas forward Tesho Akindele

On getting two starts in a row…

The week of training is tough. Everything is competitive. We have a lot of good players. At the end of the day, the coaches go with their gut. They go with whoever they think has momentum. I’ve been working really hard. I’ve been producing in practice. They noticed that and hopefully they continue to notice.

On his goal…

I saw Hernan [Grana] with the ball out wide. He always beats his guy and gets a good cross in so I faked like I was making my run towards the near post and then peeled off of it. He found me with a perfect cross and all I had to do was touch it into the net.

On playing better in the second half…

We just kind of woke up. We started out flat but in the second half, we felt that if we brought a lot of energy and did the little things right, we could turn things around. Oscar [Pareja] came in at halftime and really got into us. We were flat. We were keeping the ball too long. We just were not ourselves. We press a lot in the second half. We believed that we could come back and win the game and it paid off for us.

On starting out slow two weeks in a row…

We definitely need to touch things up from the first minute to the end we need to be concentrated and ready to go. Teams are catching us in the first 15 minutes and we need to be more aware of that.

On being in a more offensive role in the second half…

I found myself in better spaces in the second half, for sure. In the 4-4-2, it’s my job to play off of the forwards. I’m trying to get into that space and attack as much as possible. I’m still adapting to Javier [Morales]. It took me a little bit to adjust to Mauro [Diaz]. It’s coming along. Hopefully we can continue to grow and play better in the 4-2-3-1.

General thoughts on the match…

We wanted to win it. It was a difficult match. They always had an advantage. Even though, they had the game, we’re not going to have a bitter taste because a point at home is still helpful. We didn’t lose and that’s important. We have to continue down our path because we’re doing so well.

On his celebration with Oscar Pareja…

He opened the doors for me with this club. It was a difficult time for me when I left Portland. He bet on me, talked and brought me here. That’s why I celebrated with him.

On playing against his former team…

It’s difficult. I have many friends there. I was there for two and a half years and I have great affection with the people, but I have to defend this team now. FC Dallas opened the doors for me. I was able to score a good goal and now I will celebrate it with family and know that we still have a lot in front of us.
