Absolutely gorgeous day for the first home game of MLS play. Couldn’t have asked for better weather with shorts and t-shirt being the clothing of choice for most of the fans. With the start of the season came enthusiasm as everyone showed up to watch us play against Lee Nguyen’s New England Revolution. Tifo’s came out, the chants were back, and of course the lone construction worker from Wednesday was back at it with the overtime.
It’s a good thing when you sell out two games in a row, the only thing that takes away from it is the reduced capacity however. Although, that void was filled by everyone’s favorite construction worker! I like to think that he requests to work on FCD game days so he can get those hours in, but at the same time enjoy a game of his favorite team. At one point he went over to retrieve a ball that had strayed over into the stands and the crowd cheered for him. Definitely hoping he comes to more matches, although, Tex Hooper might get a little jealous at the additional team mascot.
There were a lot more fans at the game than I had thought there would be. Shouldn’t have been surprised though as with the amazing weather, success of last season, and being the season opener there was more than likely a sellout to happen even with no construction. There weren’t many Revs fans from what I could tell, but when they scored I could spot a few scattered throughout the stadium.
Oh yes, the old soccer art of painting a big picture and displaying it for the whole stadium, and sometimes cameras, to see. There were two awesome tifos to come up, one from the Beer Garden that had an excellent ‘Unfinished Business’ tifo with general Pareja pictured. Then El Matador had a more amusing tifo that was the Arthur clenched-fist meme reminding the Revs that they were there just last year with a chance to win a trophy. Oddly enough, the game on Saturday went eerily similar to the Cup Final match with the Revs scoring first and FC Dallas mounting a come back.
It was absolutely fantastic to have the team back, so excited to continue this season, and now we...wait...we don’t play again until April 4th?! Next home game isn’t until April 8th?! Wow. It’s against one of the newer franchises in MLS, but still, so far away...
Are you a fan of the lone construction worker? Who else got a good glimpse of the tifos on either side of the stadium? Where were you seated on opening day? Let me know in the comments below!
