March Outlook: How does FC Dallas open the 2017 season?

The schedule could get tricky with the Champions League games.

The 2017 season is finally here as FC Dallas is already busy at work in the CONCACAF Champions League. The early start to the season could be a good thing for the club or it could be a distraction, time will tell.

But as we do with our monthly outlooks, here is a gander at what is ahead:

Arade Unido - away - Champions League - March 1 (7:00 pm)

We start tonight with a road trip to Panama. A 4-0 lead is in the back pockets for Oscar Pareja’s crew.

LA Galaxy - away - March 4 (3:00 pm)

We start exactly where we ended the regular season last year. The Galaxy have seen a lot of turnover this season from their star-studded roster from a year ago. A new manager enters the fold as well for them as Bruce Arena is off with the national team. This is also Giovani dos Santos’ team now, not Robbie Keane, who is back in Europe. If there was a time to get this LA team, it may be in this season opener.

Sporting KC - away - March 11 (8:00 pm)

We know Kansas City can be a bit of a tricky proposition for FC Dallas. SKC is a sneaky team in my mind this season. Their new additions fit in nicely with some of the returning veterans of the team. With the potential CCL semifinal looming around this one, FCD could be distracted from this one.

New England Revolution - home - March 18 (7:00 pm)

The home opener is always a big deal. Between some of the on-going stadium construction, new club suits, new sound system and video boards, a lot of things will look and feel good when we open things up. Getting a team like New England should be a in-the-bag type win too as I really feel that this FCD team should not lose games at home this season. At all. Period.

One thing we do know is that a potential CCL semifinal could be sandwiched between those SKC and New England games. Right now the semifinal first leg is set for March 14-16, which means FCD will probably play that Wednesday (March 15). It may be ‘one more game’ to deal with but you can almost bet that FCD will prioritize that game heavily over the other two MLS games.

To be fair, I wouldn’t be at all shocked to see MLS potentially move the SKC game out to help FCD prepare for the CCL. They have a long history of helping teams out in the CCL with the schedule congestion.

That being said, out of the three MLS games this month, on paper this is a seven point month in my mind. LA seems like a game this group can pull a win out of, as does the home opener. The SKC game is a toss-up in my mind as I need to see them in action on week one.

What do you think is a reasonable opening month for FCD?
