Hoops Home & Abroad: Rogelio Funes Mori remains simply unstoppable

Rogelio continues to score in bunches, as Monterrey advances.

Welcome to another week of Big D Soccer’s coverage of your favorite players with ties to FC Dallas, the FCD Academy, and the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

Rogelio Funes Mori continues to have his way with Liga MX defenses, Weston has another rough week, and Castillo has his first bad match in a while. Plus there’s an Emerson Hyndman sighting.

Europe

Weston McKennie (AP - Schalke 04/Bundesliga): Weston started Saturday against visiting Koln. Weston had his second subpar week in a row, and while he didn’t actually have a bad match, he looked sluggish on the ball, and somewhat hesitant in his decision making. Weston played 56 minutes, before being subbed out, and Schalke 04 had to settle for a 2-2 home draw.

The draw keeps Schalke 04, 3rd place in the Bundesliga Table.

Next Match: Schalke 04 vs. Borussia Monchengladbach, Saturday, December 9, 11:30 am

Shaft Brewer Jr. (AP - RB Leipzig U19): Shaft did not suit up Saturday, in RB Leipzig U19s 3-0 victory at Union Berlin U19.

RB Leipzig U19 vs. Hertha BSC U19, Sunday, December 10, 5:00 am

Keaton Parks (DFW - Benfica II/Segunda Liga): Keaton appears to find himself in a bit of an odd place. Keaton continues to train with the first team, but can’t appear to get in the top 18 at the time. At the same time, Keaton is not playing for Benfica II.

It’s clear that Keaton has climbed the ladder in the depth chart at a pretty fast rate, but his climb has slowed. Fans will simply have to be patient, as Keaton’s continued training with the first team, indicates that the manager sees potential in Keaton, and wants to monitor his development closely.

It’s very likely that Keaton will get his next shot with the first team in the Portugal Cup match next Wednesday.

Next Match: Benfica vs. Estoril, Saturday, December 9, 12:15 am

Portugal Cup, Rio Ave vs. Benfica, Wednesday, December 13, 3:00 pm

Next Match: your guess is as good as mine

Fabian Castillo (FCD - Trabzonspor/Super Lig): Fabian suited up Thursday, in the away leg of the Turkey Cup, against BB Erzurumspor. Fabian did not play, as Trabzonspor had an easy time, and won 4-0. Trabzonspor will now take a 4-0 aggregate lead into the home leg, on Monday.

Fabian started Monday, against visiting Antalyaspor. Fabian’s form finally cooled off, and he had a less than stellar half. Trabzonspor took a 1-0 lead into the half, and with Castillo displaying a lack of control on his first touch, and not being the strongest of defenders, Castillo was subbed out to start the second half. Trabzonspor would go on to win 3-0.

The win sees Trabzonspor increase their unbeaten streak to 7 matches, with six of them wins. The win sees Trabzonspor, stay 8th place in the Super Lig Table.

Mexico - Apertura Torneo

Rogelio Funes Mori (DFW - Monterrey/Liga MX): Rogelio started in the away leg of the Apertura Liguilla Semifinals at Morelia. Rogelio played the full match and Monterrey won 1-0.

Rogelio started in the home leg of the Apertura Liguilla Semifinals, against visiting Morelia. Rogelio was contained on Thursday, by the Morelia defense, but there was little that Morelia could do slow down Reglio, on his home turf:

Rogelio would finish with a hat trick, as Monterrey would get a 4-0 victory, and win the series by an aggregate score of 5-0.

Rogelio has been a cold-blooded killer in the Liguilla, as he has scored six out of the 11 goals for Los Rayados, with one assist. Here’s a video, that shows how Monterrey, victimized the Morelia defense, with long ball after long ball to Rogelio:

The series win sees Monterrey advance to the Apertura Liguilla Final. Their opponent will be none other than fellow Monterrey club and bitter rival, Tigres UANL, for an all Monterrey final. This will be the first-ever Liga MX Final, featuring the crosstown rivals, and makes it a must watch series!
