FC Dallas trades Walker Zimmerman to LAFC

FCD picks up the top allocation spot and allocation money

MLS: Vancouver Whitecaps FC at FC Dallas Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

That didn’t take long. One of the crazier things about the end of the MLS season is the flurry of activities between clubs once the Cup is hoisted and the confetti settles. FC Dallas announced trading Walker Zimmeran to LAFC in exchange for allocation money and more interestingly, the top spot in the allocation order.

Zimmerman, a former first round draft pick and potential USMNT centerback had a breakout year in 2016 where he scored 4 goals and made 30 starts (both career highs), and looked to have formed a strong defensive partnership with captain Matt Hedges. 2017 saw Zimmerman’s star fade as he suffered a knee injury during the summer and never seemed to recover fully. Zimmerman found himself regulated to the bench as his play suffered and Oscar Pareja seemed to have lost trust in the former playoff hero.

In exchange, Dallas picked up $500,000 in total allocation money ($250,000 in General Allocation Money and $250,000 in Target Allocation Money) and the top spot in the allocation ranking.

The top spot meas that FC Dallas will have first priority to acquire a player listed on the “Allocation Ranking List”. The list is comprised of players of select U.S. Men’s National Team players, select elite U.S. Youth National Team players and players transferred outside of MLS that netted a transfer fee of at least $500,000.

You can find a list of available players here.

Though difficult to see a player like Walker Zimmerman go, who’s been a great teammate and effective player for FC Dallas, $500k in allocation money and the top spot in the allocation order is a good piece of business.

This does leave Dallas with just one centerback on the roster right now, and let the wild speculations begin on who Fernando Clavijo and company are targeting with that top allocation spot.

What do your thoughts on the trade? Good piece of business? Bad move? Sad to see Zimmerman go? Out of the list, who do you want to see Dallas acquire this off-season?
