Hoops Home & Abroad: Rogelio Funes Mori has huge weekend

Rogelio was simply unstoppable in the first round of the Liguilla

Welcome to another week of Big D Soccer’s coverage of your favorite players with ties to FC Dallas, the FCD Academy, and the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

Rogelio had a memorable weekend, Weston had a weekend he’d rather forget, and Castillo continues his run of fine form.

Europe

Weston McKennie (AP - Schalke 04/Bundesliga): Weston started Saturday, in the Rivierderby, at Borussia Dortmund. It would be Weston’s worst match for Schalke 04, and it would get McKennie pulled in the 33rd minute, as Schalke 04 quickly fell behind 4-0. Schalke 04 would use all 3 substitutions by halftime. It worked, as Schalke 04 mounted a furious rally, and earned a 4-4 draw.

The draw sees Schalke 04 drop down one spot to 3rd place in the Bundesliga Table.

Next Match: Schalke 04 vs. Koln, Saturday, December 2, 11:30 am

Shaft Brewer Jr. (AP - RB Leipzig U19): Shaft did not suit up Sunday, in a 5-3 loss at Hannover 96.

The loss sees RB Leipzig U19, drop to 6th place in the U19 Nord Bundesliga Table.

Next Match: Union Berlin U19 vs. RB Leipzig U19, Saturday, December 2, 7:00 pm

Keaton Parks (DFW - Benfica II/Segunda Liga): There was a lot of excitement surrounding Keaton this past week. The excitement began, when Benfica kept Keaton practicing with the first team, instead of sending him back to Benfica II. The excitement increased, when Keaton traveled with the first team, and again when he suited up Sunday, for the first team, against visiting Vitoria Setubal.

Keaton did not see action Sunday, as the game quickly became a route, and Vitoria Setubal was down to 10 men by halftime. Benfica won 6-0.

Benfica moves to third place in the Primeira Liga Table.

Next Match: Porto vs. Benfica, Friday, December 1, 2:30 pm

Emerson Hyndman (DFW - AFC Bournemouth): Emerson was back in the starting line-up for the Bournemouth U23, against Brentford B. Emerson played the full match, and handled all set pieces, as the U23 went on to a 2-0 victory.

Next Match: Unknown

Fabian Castillo (FCD - Trabzonspor/Super Lig): Fabian started Sunday, at Sivasspor. Fabian was again playing Right Mid, in the 4-1-4-1 formation for the first half, and then again in the 4-2-3-1 formation in the second half. Fabian’s run of good form continued, and he made a difference early:

Fabian played 77 minutes and had 1 assist, 1 shot on goal, and 6 dribbles (the act of beating a defender 1v1 on the dribble). Fabian did struggle with his passing, at only 66.7%.

The win sees Trabzonspor jump to 8th place in the Super Lig Table.

It should be pointed out that Trabzonspor fans are getting a little “Deja Vu”, as last season the team went on a near three-month unbeaten streak, once Castillo returned from an early-season injury. This season, Castillo suffered an early season injury, and since his return, Trabzonspor finds itself in a five-match unbeaten streak and has a favorable schedule to end the year. Trabzonspor will host three matches, and one of their 3 road matches, will be at a lower division club, while another will be against the second lowest team in the Super Lig Table.

Next Matches: Turkish Cup, BB Erzurumspor vs. Trabzonspor, Thursday, November 30, 8:30 am

Trabzonspor vs. Antalyaspor, Monday, December 4, 11:00 am

Mexico - Apertura Torneo

Rogelio Funes Mori (DFW - Monterrey/Liga MX): Rogelio started in the Away Leg of the Clausura Playoffs at Atlas. Rogelio wasted little time in making his presence felt:

Rogelio’s goals, came in the 5th and 17th minutes, securing a 2-1 away leg victory.

Rogelio started Sunday, in the Home Leg against visiting Atlas. Once again, Rogelio wasted little time in taking control of the match:

That was just 15 minutes in, and a little over 10 minutes later, Rogelio helped put the series away:

Monterrey would win the match 4-1 and the series by a combined 6-2 score. Rogelio scored half of the goals and had a hand in one of the other three.

Next Matches: Away Leg, Morelia vs. Monterrey, Thursday, November 30. 7:30pm

Home Leg, Monterrey vs. Morelia, Sunday, December 3, 6:00 pm

Alejandro Zendejas (FCD/AP - Atletico Zacatepec/Ascenso MX): No match scheduled this week.

The win sees Municipal get the 3rd seed in the Liguilla.

Nick started Wednesday, in the Away Leg at Guastatoya, and got a 1-1 draw.

Next Match: Home Leg, Municipal vs. Guastatoya, Saturday, December 3, 3:00 pm

Blas Perez (FCD - Municipal/Guatemala): Blas suited up Sunday but did not play in the 2-0 victory over visiting Suchitepequez.

The win sees Municipal get the 3rd seed in the Liguilla.

Blas started Wednesday, in the Away Leg at Guastatoya. Blas, who’s scoring touch had disappeared in the second half of the Apertura, found his touch:

The goal secured a favorable 1-1 road draw for Municipal.

Next Match: Home Leg, Municipal vs. Guastatoya, Saturday, December 3, 3:00 pm

Moises Hernandez (FCD/AP - Comunicaciones/Guatemala): Moises did not suit up Sunday, as Comunicaciones lost 2-0 at Marquense.

The loss sees Los Cremas drop to 7th place in the Primera Division Table.

This was the final match of the Apertura, and as such, it means Comunicaciones missed out on the Liguilla.

Anibal Chala (FCD - LDU Quito, Loan/Ecuador): Anibal started Sunday, at Emelec. The entire defense played one of their worst matches of the season and lost 4-2. Chala was culpable in one of the goals allowed.

The loss drops LDU Quito to 7th place in the Primera A Table.
