Hoops Home & Abroad: Weston McKennie earns a USMNT call up!

New, 1 comment

We discuss all things Weston McKennie.

Welcome to another week of Big D Soccer’s coverage of your favorite players with ties to FC Dallas, the FCD Academy, and the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

Nobody has had a bigger week than Weston McKennie, Shaft (Shut yo!) Brewer finally suits up in Germany, and Fabian Castillo gets his first post-injury start.

Europe

Weston McKennie (AP - Schalke 04/Bundesliga): Weston finallygot the news he had been anxiously awaiting:

Weston started Saturday at Freiburg. Weston had his most dominant performance yet, as Schalke 04 won 1-0. Weston had 1 Aerial won, 4 Tackles, 1 Interception, 2 Clearances, with 67.9% pass completion.

The win sees Schalke 04 jump to 4th place in the Bundesliga Table, just 6 points out of 1st place.

Weston’s team is actually tied on points (20 points) with Christian Pullisic’s team (Dortmund), with their first head to head match up, fast approaching (November 25).

Weston had the following to say about the highly anticipated match:

“I met him as a 13-year-old, he was my first buddy in the junior national team,” explains McKennie, who signed a contract until 2022 at Schalke last month, meaning he has the longest of any of the Royal Blue players. “Christian was the first of us to make it to the Bundesliga. That our ways have crossed in this way in the German professional game is a crazy, beautiful thing. We spend a lot of time together privately.”

The two Americans have yet to play on the same pitch in the Bundesliga, but on 25 November, in Dortmund, the first chance will arrive for an American clash inside the Revierderby – Germany’s biggest local derby, between Schalke and Dortmund.

“We (Mckennie and Pulisc) are the best example that even as a Schalke and Dortmund player can be friends,” McKennie said. “There are even (close friendships) in which one heart beats for Schalke and the other for BVB.” But it is understood that even friendship can’t come between these two sides.

“Christian and I know very well that our friendship will have to be on hold for 90 minutes on the 25th of November.”

One last note on Weston:

This is a really big deal, as Schalke 04 is set to lose the heart of their midfield, and the loss will likely mean increased playing time for Weston once it actually happens.

Next Match: Portugal vs. USMNT, Tuesday, November 14

Shaft Brewer Jr. (AP - RB Leipzig U19): Having turned 18 at the end of October, Shaft suited up for RB Leipzig U19s, for the first time on Saturday at Chemnitzer FC U19. Shaft didn’t play in the 0-0 draw, but it’s just a matter of time before he does.

The draw sees RB Leipzig U19s to 5th place in the U19 Bundesliga Table.

Fabian Castillo (FCD - Trabzonspor/Super Lig): Fabian started Saturday at Kayserispor. Castillo started as the Right Forward in the 4-3-3 formation, which is not a position he normally plays. Castillo and the rest of the non-defenders struggled throughout the match. Castillo played 78 minutes, only taking 1 shot, and having a miserable 59% Pass Completion rate, which was middle of the pack for all the attackers. Trabzonspor managed to leave with a 0-0 draw.

The draw sees Trabzonspor to 13th place in the Super Lig Table.

Moises Hernandez (FCD/AP - Comunicaciones/Guatemala): Moises did not suit up on Saturday, in Los Cremas 2-1 win over visiting Xelaju.

Following the match, Anibal was critical of the team:

Let’s just say that some fans are not taking Anibal’s criticism of the team very well. There’s also the continued speculation that Anibal will not be returning to LDU Quito next season.
