We’re continuing on in our roster evaluations today with a look at another veteran player in goalkeeper Chris Seitz.
Seitz has been with the club for what feels like forever now as he was brought in back in 2011.
What Seitz brings to the table
Seitz does what you would expect him to as a backup keeper. He is there when your main keeper needs a day off or has been called into the national team. He provides good leadership and covers in the back as well.
2016 was really a big year for the veteran keeper, he made 28 starts and was the key cog in the defense as the team pushed for the US Open Cup and the Supporters’ Shield. He was expected to lead the charge again in 2017 but that didn’t last long as he lost his starting spot to Jesse Gonzalez (again, the same thing happened in 2015).
By the end of the season, we only saw limited action from Seitz. In league play, he made five starts with a 3-2-0 record, 12 saves and eight goals against.
For a backup keeper, his salary impact isn’t bad at all. I’ve always said in this league that you don’t need to spend big on keepers to do well and Seitz’s $153k total compensation is what you would expect for a keeper of his age and ability.
This one seems fairly straightforward to me as I don’t think many MLS clubs will project him as an everyday starter anymore. He is good for the locker room, good for the young keepers like Gonzalez, and you know what you’re going to get from him for a few games a year.
I would assume FCD will go out for another year with Seitz as they wait it out for Homegrown prospects like Ben Hale (who is having a solid season in the college ranks right now). But we leave it to you all to make the call here today, should FCD keep Seitz for another season or move on?
Should FC Dallas move on from Chris Seitz?

Yes, we can get a younger and cheaper backup to Jesse.
No, we still need him to fill in for Jesse on occasion.
