Our offseason series that looks at each FC Dallas player continues on today as we dive into another veteran of the team. Up next is a glance at Maynor Figueroa and what he brings to FC Dallas.
What Figueroa brings to the table
I’ll admit, Figueroa has been one of those players for FC Dallas that I’ve enjoyed watching a lot over the last two years. He may be getting up there in age (31 years old) but his leadership on the field is still very good.
This season he made 26 starts, two less than in 2016. Most of that was due to his time with the Honduran national team as they looked to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. I have no doubt that he would have started more games had he not received as many call-ups as he did this season.
This season he brought in three goals, some that were timely like that against Sporting Kansas City back in April. He does well at getting forward into the attack but as he’s gotten older, his speed has decreased a bit, making him vulnerable to getting back in time to defend.
The veteran Honduran is a pricy player to have at his age. He brings in a base salary of $320k, with total compensation of just $343k. Expensive in some ways but you do pay a bit of a premium in this league for quality outside defenders.
I’ve said a few times this year, as have others, that you can’t have your two starting fullbacks be over 30. Figueroa and Hernan Grana both are over that mark in age and it is certainly time to consider other options. I do like having him as an option in the middle of the defense. At times when he was paired with Matt Hedges we did see some good results, and at times we did not (Hedges had as much of an up and down year as anyone).
Personally, I would like to see him brought back at a cheaper rate but given his international tag on the roster, it would be nice to have that slot open up for someone younger.
What do you all say, one more year to Figueroa or move on?
Should FC Dallas keep Maynor Figueroa for 2018?
