Both teams are coming off wins Tuesday night in different competitions. Toronto won their second leg of the Canadian Championship over Montreal while FCD downed Colorado in the US Open Cup Round of 16.
FC Dallas notes:
Injury update. Once again, just one player to discuss here as Walker Zimmerman continues to rehab his MCL strain.
On call. Both teams will be dealing with some international call ups for this game but FC Dallas sees Kellyn Acosta, Matt Hedges and Maynor Figueroa out for this one as they deal with the Gold Cup.
Against TFC at home. FC Dallas is 6-0-2 (15 GF, 8 GA) vs. Toronto at Toyota Stadium.
Last time around. Last year when these two clubs faced off against one another, it was a wild night. Most will remember it as the game that Ryan Hollingshead played the final few minutes in goal in a 1-0 loss.
On those draws. According to the club’s game notes, FC Dallas is on pace to tie 14.8 matches this season. The club record is 14, which was also recorded during the 2010 season.
Key player for FCD: Carlos Gruezo. This one is going to come down to how well FC Dallas clogs up the midfield. Gruezo will possibly be tasked with shadowing one of Toronto’s big three in Sebastian Giovinco, Michael Bradley or Jozy Alitdore. If he is able to lock down the midfield and keep the pressure off the back line, FCD will have a good chance in this one.
Biggest Question: Will the defense be able to hold?
Last week was certainly a test in Houston against the Dynamo’s high-flying attack (that has actually really cooled off in recent weeks). But a few weeks ago in Portland, a make-shift defense struggled to keep the high-pressure Timbers from finding the back of the net. Toronto is another juggernaut in front of goal that will certainly test this group.
Toronto FC Notes:
Key player for TFC: Giovinco. We know how dangerous this guy can be in front of net. He hasn’t put up the big number so far this season but he has got going more so in front of net in recent weeks. Stop him and you stand a good chance at stopping this club.
OUT: Nich Hagglaund (torn MCL)
Justin Morrow (USA); Armando Cooper (Panama); Raheem Edwards, Jonathan Osorio, Tosaint Ricketts (Canada)
