FC Dallas took on Houston Dynamo in a rarely nationally televised match in the first edition of the Texas Derby for the 2017 season. It was a well fought match, with plenty of chances from both sides, but neither could open the scoring and had to settle for a 0-0 draw.
Battle of the Goalkeepers
Both Tyler Deric and Jesse Gonzalez had to be on top of their game for this heated matchup, and both goalkeepers delivered. The 27th minute was intense in particular, as the opening 20 was a bit dull with little chances, until Kellyn Acosta stepped up. He struck a free kick from 30 yards out, Tyler Deric was in full reach to deny the homegrown midfield of a screamer. It wasn’t even a minute later where Erick ‘Cubo’ Torres played the ball back to Alberth Elis where he one timed it, forced Gonzalez into an unbelievable save.
With Chris Seitz returning between the sticks on Thursday in the loss vs Chicago, Jesse has done little to convince Oscar Pareja that he needs time on the bench. He now has five shutouts this season, which matched his career high in the 2015 season. The future looks very bright for the 22-year-old
One Nat down, two Nats performed
One of the low points of the night was the injury of Walker Zimmerman with an apparent knee injury being subbed off in the 24th minute. Best case scenario, he will only be out for a couple of weeks, but this could hamper Zimmerman’s opportunity to make it into the Gold Cup squad and could hurt his opportunity to make it to Russia.
While Walker did not make it onto the roster for this round of the World Cup qualifiers, his teammates Matt Hedges and Kellyn Acosta did. The latter is appearing to become a USMNT regular, while the captain’s call up has been long overdue. Matt Hedges had to pull some extra weight whenever his defensive partner went down, and put in a fantastic shift. Shortly after Zim went off, Matt Hedges dove for a header to deny Houston of a goalscoring chance.
Kellyn Acosta has been proving week in week out that he is one of the best central midfielders in MLS. He produced this gem of a chance.
My thought, if Lamah had been cutting in, instead of Colman trying to follow from a more difficult position, that could have been the game winner. But, Kellyn has been playing incredibly, and the homegrown is able to show plays like these on his CV.
Super Mauro is back!
Need I say much more? After being out with a ruptured Achilles, Mauro Diaz has returned to the pitch. This is a big boost for Oscar Pareja as his recovery is ahead of schedule. Diaz looked a bit rusty, for obvious reasons, and he looked a little hesitant to go into some tackles. I am sure like myself, everyone watching was holding their breath whenever Mauro got tackled. It will not be another month or so that we will see the Argentinian playmaker into the starting XI, but this was a welcome addition, and a confidence boost for FC Dallas to have a player like him back in the arsenal.
